What should be done to prevent cable faults?
Date: 2023-07-05Read: 6

1. Online monitoring of cable load current

Due to overloading of cable operation, cable temperature will increase, accelerating the aging rate of cable insulation, significantly reducing cable life, and making cable joints and other weak insulation areas prone to breakdown. Therefore, the allowable current carrying capacity of cables should be verified based on the cable laying method, operating conditions, number of cables, and surrounding environmental temperature, and clear regulations should be made. To prevent the cable current carrying capacity from exceeding the specified value during operation, real-time monitoring of the cable current carrying capacity should be carried out, which can effectively avoid cable faults caused by long-term overload operation of the cable.

2. Real time monitoring of cable temperature

Before a cable failure occurs, there is often a local temperature rise. Installing a device to monitor the operating temperature of the cable can reflect the operating temperature of the cable in real time, which can better understand the operation of the cable, prevent overheating of the cable, detect cable hidden dangers in the first time, and avoid cable failure.

3. Prevent chemical corrosion of cables

When selecting cables, full consideration should be given to the usage environment, and cables that match the usage environment should be chosen. In the selection of cable laying paths, soil data should be fully analyzed to determine the degree of soil and groundwater corrosion. If the corrosion is severe, an outer layer of protection should be added to the outer layer of the cable, and then corrosion-resistant pipes should be used to install the cable. For buried cables, the degree of cable corrosion should also be understood, and if necessary, the soil can be excavated for inspection.

4. Prevent cable electrolytic corrosion

Shielding tubes can be installed on cables to enhance the ability of metal components around the insulation of the cable sheath. Attention should be paid to the potential difference of the lead sheath to the ground and other pipelines, as well as to prevent electrolytic corrosion of the lead sheath, in order to enhance the anti electrolytic corrosion ability of the cable.

5. Choose cables with reliable quality

Compared to traditional oil paper insulated cables, cross-linked polyethylene cables have a higher ability to withstand temperature rise than oil paper insulated cables. Moreover, this type of cable allows for significantly higher working field strength and current carrying capacity than oil paper insulated cables, and the high drop almost does not affect the laying of this type of cable. Therefore, compared to cross-linked polyethylene cables, oil paper insulated cables are more suitable for use in high-temperature environments.

6. Improve cable laying technology

Tunnel laying, cable trench laying, pipe laying, and DC laying are common cable laying methods. In order to better prevent external damage to cables, during actual cable laying operations, full consideration should be given to the actual ground building and surrounding environmental conditions, and the laying method should be scientifically and reasonably selected, strictly following the laying standards. This can better protect cables and prevent cable failures.
