Key points for using cable fault tester
Date: 2025-07-22Read: 9
Cable fault testerIt is a key equipment used to detect fault points in power and communication cables, and its operating points are as follows:
1. Safety preparation
Confirm that the cable is powered off and hang a warning sign. Use a discharge rod to fully discharge the conductor and armor.
Wear insulated gloves, goggles, high-voltage insulated shoes, and ensure that the tester and high-voltage equipment casing are reliably grounded.
2. Wiring and parameter settings
Low voltage pulse method: The output end is connected to the faulty phase conductor, the black clip is connected to the cable shielding layer or ground wire, and the remote end is suspended.
High voltage flashover method: Connect the high-voltage output terminal to the faulty phase, connect the grounding terminal to the cable armor or ground grid, and gradually increase the voltage until the fault is penetrated.
Set the wave velocity (such as about 172m/μ s for cross-linked polyethylene cables), range, and pulse width (narrow pulse for low resistance and wide pulse for high resistance).
3. Waveform analysis and positioning
Observing screen waveform: Normal cable displays emitted pulses and terminal reflected pulses; The fault point is manifested as abnormal reflected pulses (polarity reversal or waveform distortion).
Measure the time difference by moving the cursor, using the formulaCalculate the fault distance (L is the fault distance, v is the wave velocity, t is the pulse round-trip time).

Combining the acoustic magnetic synchronous probe, move along the cable path to the point where the time difference between the acoustic signal and the magnetic signal is minimized, and mark the fault point.

4. Data Management and Maintenance

Store waveforms and parameters to non-volatile devices, supporting retrieval for comparative analysis.

Regularly calibrate equipment (every six months or after frequent use), store in a dry environment, and avoid severe vibration.
