What is the difference between UL THHN cable and THWN cable?
Date: 2025-04-24Read: 5

In the fields of electricity and construction, the selection of cables is crucial for the efficiency, safety, and long-term stability of power transmission. THWN cables and THHN cables are two widely used types of cables that play important roles in various electrical systems, particularly in building and industrial applications. Although these two types of cables are similar in appearance and structure, they have some key differences, mainly reflected in material characteristics, applicable environments, and application fields. Below, the editor will share with you the main differences between these two cables, so that you can refer to them when choosing cables.

UL THHN电缆和THWN电缆有什么区别?1. Definition of THWN cable and THHN cable

THWN cable (thermoplastic water-resistant nylon sheathed cable) is a type of cable with heat and water resistance characteristics. Its outer layer is usually covered with a nylon sheath, which provides additional waterproof and chemical corrosion resistance, suitable for humid or damp environments.

UL THHN cable (thermoplastic high heat resistant nylon sheathed cable) is another common cable made of thermoplastic material, with good heat resistance and nylon sheath. This cable is suitable for dry environments, especially in situations where it needs to withstand high temperatures.

Although THWN and THHN cables use similar external nylon sheaths and are interchangeable in some aspects, there are significant differences in their waterproof performance and applicable environmental conditions.

2. The main differences between THWN and THHN cables

waterproof performance

THWN cable: Its biggest feature is excellent waterproof performance, suitable for humid environments and can effectively block moisture penetration, ensuring that cable performance is not affected. This characteristic makes it an ideal choice for underground installation, humid areas, or water related environments.

THHN cable: This model is not specifically designed for waterproof environments, and its performance significantly decreases under humid conditions. Although it performs well in dry environments, there may be a risk of short circuit or damage when exposed to water.

Heat resistance characteristics

THWN cable: It has a temperature resistance upper limit of 90 ° C (194 ° F). Although it has good heat resistance, the design focus is more on its ability to adapt to humid environments, so the temperature tolerance standards are relatively loose.

THHN cable: With outstanding heat resistance, it can withstand temperatures up to 90 ° C (194 ° F) or higher (depending on specific specifications). Due to its design for dry environments, its heat resistance index is usually better than THWN models.

Applicable Environment

THWN cable: Its excellent waterproof properties make it an ideal choice for wet environments and underground installations. It performs well in building exterior walls, outdoor electrical equipment, and water supply and drainage facilities, and also has chemical corrosion resistance properties.

THHN cable: suitable for dry places and high temperature resistant scenarios, such as residential power distribution, office buildings, and commercial facilities. Although stable in high temperature environments, exposure to humid environments is strictly prohibited.

Outer protection

THWN cable: Equipped with a reinforced nylon sheath, it provides dual protection - both waterproof and chemically resistant, significantly extending its service life in harsh environments.

THHN cable: Nylon sheath mainly provides thermal protection function, which can effectively cope with temperature fluctuations in dry environments, but has weak moisture resistance.

3. Typical application comparison, using 14 gauge THWN and THHN as an example

14 AWG THWN wire:

The THWN-14 cable, which is also a thin diameter cable, is designed specifically for humid environments and is commonly used in building electrical systems, underground distribution lines, and water treatment facilities. Due to the small cross-sectional area of Line 14, it is mainly suitable for low current applications such as indoor wiring engineering and connection installation of lightweight electrical equipment.

14 AWG THHN wire:

As a thin diameter cable, the THWN wire of Line 14 is commonly used in low-power or light load power transmission scenarios, including lighting systems, socket power supply, and small electrical equipment power supply. This model is particularly suitable for wiring projects in residential, commercial buildings, and outdoor power systems.
