Working principle of environmental aging test chamber
Date: 2025-10-13Read: 10

Environmental aging test chamber is a device used to simulate various natural environmental conditions and conduct aging tests on materials and products. It can accelerate the aging process of materials or products, thereby evaluating their durability and reliability in practical use environments in a shorter period of time. Its working principle involves multiple aspects of technology and mechanisms.

1. Temperature control principle

Temperature is one of the important factors affecting material aging. The environmental aging test chamber precisely controls the temperature inside the chamber through refrigeration and heating systems. The refrigeration system usually adopts a compression refrigeration cycle, which is mainly composed of a compressor, a condenser, a throttling device, and an evaporator. The compressor compresses low-temperature and low-pressure refrigerant gas into high-temperature and high-pressure gas, which is then sent to the condenser. In the condenser, refrigerant gas dissipates heat to the surrounding environment and cools into high-pressure liquid. Next, the high-pressure liquid passes through the throttling device, and the pressure and temperature decrease, becoming a low-temperature and low-pressure liquid that enters the evaporator. In the evaporator, the low-temperature and low-pressure refrigerant liquid absorbs heat from the test chamber and evaporates into gas, thereby reducing the temperature inside the test chamber.

The heating system is achieved through an electric heater. The electric heater converts electrical energy into thermal energy. Based on the temperature signal detected by the temperature sensor inside the test chamber, the control system adjusts the power of the electric heater to maintain the temperature inside the test chamber at the set value. For example, when the temperature sensor detects that the temperature inside the box is lower than the set value, the control system will increase the power of the electric heater to raise the temperature; On the contrary, when the temperature is higher than the set value, the power of the electric heater will be reduced.

2. Principle of humidity control

Humidity is also a key factor leading to material aging. The environmental aging test chamber controls humidity through humidifiers and dehumidifiers. Humidifiers generally use steam humidification or ultrasonic humidification methods. Steam humidification is the process of heating water to produce steam, which is then introduced into a test chamber to increase the water vapor content and thus improve humidity. Ultrasonic humidification is the use of high-frequency ultrasonic vibration to transform water mist into tiny water droplets, which are emitted into the test chamber to achieve the purpose of humidification.

Dehumidifiers usually use condensation dehumidification or rotary dehumidification technology. Condensation dehumidification is the use of a refrigeration system to cool the air. When the air temperature drops below the dew point temperature, water vapor condenses into water droplets and is discharged through a drainage system, thereby reducing air humidity. Rotary dehumidification utilizes a moisture absorbing rotary wheel to absorb moisture from the air. The rotary wheel undergoes moisture absorption and desorption processes in different areas to achieve continuous dehumidification. The control system adjusts the operation of the humidifier and dehumidifier based on the humidity signal detected by the humidity sensor, to maintain the humidity inside the test chamber within the set range.

3. Principle of Lighting Simulation

In the natural environment, light plays an important role in the aging of materials. The environmental aging test chamber simulates natural lighting conditions through specific light sources. Common light sources include xenon lamps, fluorescent ultraviolet lamps, etc. Xenon lamps can emit light that is close to the spectrum of sunlight, including ultraviolet, visible, and infrared rays, and their spectral energy distribution is similar to that of sunlight. By adjusting the power and irradiation time of the xenon lamp, it is possible to simulate the light intensity and time in different regions and seasons.

Fluorescent ultraviolet lamps mainly emit ultraviolet light, which can accelerate the photoaging process of materials. The wavelength range of ultraviolet light emitted by different types of fluorescent ultraviolet lamps varies, and suitable lamps can be selected according to experimental needs. The lighting system is also equipped with filtering devices to adjust the spectral characteristics of light, making it closer to the actual lighting conditions in the environment. At the same time, the control system can accurately control the on and off time of the light source, as well as the changes in light intensity, to meet the aging test requirements of different test standards and materials.

4. Gas simulation principle

There are various gases in the actual environment, such as oxygen, sulfur dioxide, carbon dioxide, etc., which can also cause corrosion and aging of materials. The environmental aging test chamber can simulate different gas environments through a gas injection system. Inject specific gases into the test chamber according to the set concentration and flow rate, making the test environment closer to the actual usage scenario. For example, during the atmospheric corrosion resistance test of materials, an appropriate amount of sulfur dioxide and oxygen can be injected to simulate the gas composition in industrial polluted environments. By monitoring the data from gas sensors, the control system can adjust the injection amount of gas in real time to ensure that the gas concentration inside the test chamber remains stable at the set value.

5. Working principle of control system

The control system of the environmental aging test chamber is the core of the entire equipment, which coordinates the work of various components to ensure the accuracy and stability of the test environment. Control systems typically use programmable logic controllers (PLCs) or microprocessors. Real time collection of temperature, humidity, light intensity, gas concentration and other parameters in the test chamber through sensors, and comparison with pre-set test conditions.

When the actual parameters deviate from the set values, the control system will issue corresponding control commands based on the deviation amount to adjust the operating status of equipment such as refrigeration, heating, humidification, dehumidification, lighting, and gas injection, so as to quickly restore the environment inside the test chamber to the set values. At the same time, the control system also has data recording and storage functions, which can record various parameter changes throughout the entire testing process, facilitating users to analyze and evaluate the aging performance of materials in the future. In addition, some advanced control systems also support remote monitoring and operation, allowing users to view test data and control the operation of the test chamber in real-time on remote terminals through the network.
