What are the advantages and disadvantages of large-diameter gas turbine flow meters compared to ultrasonic flow meters?
Date: 2024-11-23Read: 10
Large caliber gas turbine flowmeter and ultrasonic flowmeter are two commonly used flow measurement devices, each with its own advantages and disadvantages, suitable for different industrial application scenarios.
Large caliber gas turbine flowmeter
  advantage
  1. high precisionThe full range accuracy of turbine flow meters is generally 1% -2.0%, and high-precision types are 0.5% -1.0%, making them one of the high-precision flow meters.
  2. Good repeatabilityGenerally, it can reach 0.05% to 0.2%, with good repeatability, and can achieve high accuracy through regular calibration or online calibration.
  3. Wide rangeThe medium and large caliber can generally reach 20:1 or more, while the small caliber is 10:1, and the starting flow rate is also relatively low.
  4. Low pressure lossUnder normal pressure, it is generally between 0.1 and 2.5 kPa.
  5. Compact structure and lightweight volumeEasy to install and use, with high circulation capacity.
  6. Multiple display modesIt can be equipped with only a mechanical counter or a regular flow integrator, or a temperature and pressure compensator can be added to the mechanical counter.
  shortcoming
  1. Regular verification is requiredTo maintain calibration characteristics for a long time, suspended solids or corrosive components contained in the medium can cause problems such as bearing wear and jamming, which can change its accuracy and limit its applicability.
  2. Affected by fluid propertiesThe physical properties of the medium, such as density, viscosity, etc., have a significant impact on the characteristics of turbine flow meters.
  3. High requirements for straight pipe sectionsDue to the significant influence of flow field distribution, sufficient straight pipe sections are required to ensure measurement accuracy.
ultrasonic flowmeter
  advantage
  1. Non contact measurementCan be used for non-contact measurement, suitable for large circular and rectangular pipelines, and is not limited by pipe diameter in principle.
  2. No pressure lossTo measure without flow obstruction and without additional pressure loss.
  3. Measurable non-conductive liquidsIt is a supplement to electromagnetic flow meters in unobstructed flow measurement.
  4. Large caliber rangeSuitable for large-diameter flow measurement.
  5. Low maintenance costCompared to turbine flow meters, ultrasonic flow meters require less maintenance in the later stages and have lower maintenance costs.
  shortcoming
  1. There are requirements for straight pipe sectionsA longer straight pipe section is required to ensure measurement accuracy, which may be a disadvantage in situations where space is limited.
  2. Affected by temperature and pressureThere are certain limitations in measuring high-temperature media due to the high temperature requirements for the flow field.
  3. High requirements for medium cleanlinessImpurities in water can offset the incident angle of ultrasonic waves, affecting accurate measurements.
  4. High installation requirementsUltrasonic flow meters with externally clamped transducers cannot be used for pipelines with thick lining or scaling, nor can they be used for pipelines with lining (or rust layer) peeled off from the inner pipe wall.
Overall, turbine flow meters perform well in terms of accuracy, repeatability, and range, but require regular calibration and maintenance, and have high requirements for straight pipe sections. Ultrasonic flow meters have advantages in installation convenience, no pressure loss, and low maintenance costs, but they have certain requirements for the cleanliness of the medium and the straight section of the pipeline. Users should make their choices based on specific application scenarios and needs.
