Oxygen barrier performance is one of the basic properties that cosmetic packaging should possess, which can prevent cosmetics from deteriorating or moldy during storage. This article monitors the oxygen barrier performance of cosmetic packaging by testing its oxygen permeability, providing a reference for enterprises to monitor the oxygen barrier performance of cosmetic packaging containers.
The common packaging forms of cosmetics mainly include plastic bottles, hoses, glass bottles, and soft plastic packaging bags. In order to ensure the functional requirements of cosmetics, the raw materials used in different cosmetics may vary, but overall, cosmetic raw materials are divided into matrix materials and auxiliary materials according to their performance and function. Oil based raw materials are a major matrix material, and some components of this type of raw material contain unsaturated bonds, such as olive oil. These components are easily oxidized under suitable conditions such as oxygen, light, and temperature, resulting in rancidity, odor, discoloration, etc. In addition, some cosmetics are prone to microbial growth and mold growth if not produced, used, or stored properly. Therefore, the packaging materials used in cosmetics should have good oxygen barrier properties and be able to block light, thereby reducing the amount of oxygen in contact with cosmetics and avoiding light exposure.
The testing methods for oxygen permeability of packaging materials mainly include differential pressure method and isobaric method. For container packaging, the technology of using isobaric method to test its oxygen permeability is quite mature, while the differential pressure method is still under development. This article uses the isobaric method to test the oxygen barrier performance of samples, based on GB/T 31354-2014 "Test Method for Transmittance of Packaging and Containers - Coulombometer Detection Method".
Testing the oxygen barrier performance of cosmetic plastic bottles
The experimental equipment used in the experiment is the OTR-1901 oxygen permeability testing system, branded SYSTEST. Suitable for testing the oxygen permeability of samples such as containers, films, and sheets. Among them, containers include tubes, bottles, bags, cans, boxes, buckets, etc. made of plastic, rubber, paper, paper plastic composite, glass, metal and other materials, such as medicinal ointment aluminum tubes, beverage bottles, peanut oil barrels, Tetra Pak packaging, vacuum packaging bags, metal three can pieces, plastic cosmetics packaging, toothpaste hoses, jelly cups, yogurt cups, etc; Thin films include various plastic cover films, plastic composite films, paper plastic composite films, aluminum plated films, aluminum foil and other film like materials; Sheet materials include various engineering plastics, rubber, building materials and other sheet materials, such as PP sheets, PVC sheets, PVDC sheets, etc. satisfy GB/T 19789、ASTM D3985、ASTM F2622、ASTM F1307、ASTM F1927、ISO 15105-2、JIS K7126-B、YBB 00082003 Waiting for multiple national and international standards.
Test principle
The principle of isobaric method, also known as Coulomb gauge detection method, refers to a method in which the pressure on both sides of the sample is kept consistent during the testing process, and the amount of oxygen permeating through the sample is tested through a Coulomb sensor. When testing container samples, the outer side of the sample is filled with oxygen at a certain pressure, and the inlet and outlet pipes inserted inside the sample are connected to the equipment. High purity nitrogen gas with equal pressure is introduced into the interior of the sample from the inlet pipe. Under the effect of concentration difference, oxygen permeates from the outer side of the sample into the inner side of the sample through the sample, and is carried by nitrogen gas from the outlet pipe to the sensor inside the equipment for analysis, thereby obtaining the oxygen permeability of the sample.
Test procedure
1 . Sealed sample: Use quick fix adhesive to seal the bottle mouth of the sample onto a specialized tray for container materials. Attention should be paid to ensuring good sealing between the sample and the tray, which is an important factor affecting the accuracy of the test results.
2 . Clamp the sample: Connect the inlet and outlet pipes of the tray rack to the inlet and outlet holes of the equipment, and cover and seal the sample and tray with aluminum foil bags.
3 . Set parameters: Set parameters such as sample name, test temperature, humidity, and test mode.
4 . Start experiment: Click on the experiment option to start the experiment. Start the gas source, adjust the humidity and carrier gas flow rate, and the equipment displays the measured oxygen level in real time.
5 . End of experiment: After the experiment is completed, the equipment automatically calculates and displays the test results based on the tested oxygen level.
The oxygen permeability of cosmetic plastic bottle packaging was tested using the principle of isobaric method, and improving the oxygen barrier performance of packaging materials is an effective way to prevent cosmetic ingredients from being oxidized and moldy.
