Cetyl alcohol, also known as palmitol or 1-hexadecanol, is a long-chain fatty alcohol, which is a common additive in food, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, personal care products (such as lotion and face cream) and industrial fuels. Whale wax alcohol has multiple uses and can be used as a thickener, emulsifier, moisturizer, lubricant, and flavoring agent in product formulations. Whether orally or through skin contact, it can be safely used by humans. Research has found that small impurities in cetamol may cause dermatitis.

To ensure the quality of cetamol, the United States Pharmacopeia (USP) outlines a chemical purity determination method in the USP National Formulary (NF) cetamol monograph. The monograph provides an overview of the procedures for evaluating instrument performance using gas chromatography/flame ionization detection (FID), measuring cetamol content, and identifying common fatty alcohol impurities (stearyl alcohol, lauryl alcohol, nutmeg alcohol, and oleyl alcohol) and other unknown impurities. This application article displays the Perkin Elmer GC2400 with FID ™ The system analyzes the performance of residual impurities in cetamol based on USP monograph, while improving compound separation and highly reproducible injection.
