Application of Ozone in Water Treatment
Date: 2022-07-14Read: 5
The oxidation-reduction potentials of ozone and chlorine are 2.07V and 1.36V, respectively. Therefore, the oxidizing property of ozone is second only to hydroxyl radicals • OH and fluorine, making it a stronger oxidant and biocide than chlorine. It can be used as an oxidant or disinfectant in water treatment.
Ozone is actually known to most people. After lightning, the air appears particularly fresh, as lightning forms a significant amount of ozone in the air. Oxygen molecules generate oxygen ions in lightning ionization reactions, which then combine with oxygen molecules to form ozone molecules. All ozone generators made by people are based on the principle that they do not require any other raw materials. With electricity, they can discharge lightning to form ozone.
Ozone has a strong oxidizing ability, second only to fluorine in terms of its oxidizing properties. Ozone has a broad-spectrum disinfection effect and is easily reduced to oxygen. There is no secondary pollution in its application, so it has its * * properties. The most widespread and successful application of ozone oxidation technology is in the treatment of drinking water.
In recent years, ozone treatment technology has been widely used in water treatment and industrial disinfection. Ozone is easily soluble in water, with a solubility about 13 times that of oxygen. Ozone dissolved in water has stronger disinfection ability, up to 300-2000 times that of chlorine gas. Ozone not only kills bacteria in the air, water, and surfaces of objects, but also rapidly reduces to oxygen through reaction, without causing secondary pollution or posing a threat to the living environment.
When used as a disinfectant for disinfection, it has a good cleaning effect and a short contact time. For example, if the product of the dosage and contact time required for ozone to achieve a certain disinfection effect is 5, to achieve the same effect, the product of the dosage and contact time of chlorine is 1440.
The major feature of ozone disinfection is that when organic matter is present in water, it does not produce toxic substances such as organic chlorides that are easily generated during chlorine disinfection. Moreover, due to the strong oxidizing power of ozone, it can not only remove organic substances such as color and odor from water, but also have multiple functions such as deodorization, color removal, and phenol removal.
Due to its fast decomposition and absence of residual substances, it is particularly suitable for disinfecting drinking water with slightly polluted surface water as the source and disinfecting the effluent from advanced sewage treatment. By utilizing the strong oxidizing properties of ozone, metal ions such as Fe2+and Mn2+in wastewater can be oxidized to higher or higher oxidation states, and then added with alkali to form more insoluble hydroxide precipitates that can be removed from water. When the wastewater contains toxic reducing inorganic substances such as cyanide, sulfide, nitrite, etc., ozone oxidation can be used to oxidize them into non-toxic or less toxic substances such as CO2, N2O, SO42-, NO3-, etc. When reacting with organic matter, the oxidation of ozone can cause the rupture of unsaturated organic molecules and lead to ozone decomposition. Ozone molecules react at the original double bond position of polar organic molecules, splitting their molecules into two carboxylic acid molecules.
The spontaneous splitting of ozone produces a carboxyl compound and zwitterionic compounds with acidic and basic groups, the latter of which is unstable and can decompose into acids and aldehydes. Therefore, in the field of wastewater treatment, the property of ozone has been widely utilized to treat some organic wastewater that is difficult to biodegrade as a pretreatment for secondary biological treatment. The UV/ozone photochemical system can promote the decomposition of ozone to produce more oxidative • OH radicals, thereby improving the oxidation rate and efficiency of ozone and achieving mineralization treatment of organic matter. For example, when such a system is used to treat wastewater containing xylene, it can oxidize xylene into non-toxic water and carbon dioxide.ozone generator
