As the "blood vessel" of modern power, communication, transportation and other fields, the reliability of cable operation is crucial. However, cable failures are difficult to avoid due to manufacturing defects, construction damage, insulation aging, external force damage, and environmental erosion. Quickly and accurately locating the fault point and repairing it is the key to ensuring the stable operation of the system - the cable fault tester is the core "diagnostic" tool in this field.
1、 Cable fault types: a prerequisite for accurate detection
Understanding the nature of the fault is the basis for selecting testing methods:
Low resistance fault:The insulation resistance between phases or relative to ground significantly decreases (usually below several hundred ohms), such as short circuits or low resistance grounding.
High resistance fault:The insulation resistance is relatively high (ranging from several thousand ohms to megaohms), but the insulation has been damaged, such as dampness or deterioration. This type of malfunction is the most common and difficult to detect.
Open circuit fault:Continuity interruption of conductor, infinite resistance (such as cable being pulled apart).
Flashover fault:Insulation undergoes instantaneous breakdown and discharge under high voltage, but after the voltage is removed, the insulation recovers (if there is an air gap), making it difficult to detect using low voltage methods.
2、 Core Testing Principles and Methods
Modern cable fault testers typically integrate multiple methods to form a complete process of "pre positioning+precise positioning":
Pre positioning (distance measurement): Determine the approximate range of the fault point
Principle:Injecting attenuated oscillation wave signals (DAC) into faulty cables can cause changes in oscillation frequency or attenuation characteristics at the fault point. By analyzing these changes, the fault distance can be determined.
Advantage:Small damage to cables (low voltage), can be tested online or offline without disconnecting cable joints, especially suitable for distribution network cables and long-distance testing.
Principle:By utilizing the low resistance characteristic of the arc generated by high-voltage breakdown at the fault point, high-frequency pulses are emitted and their reflections are captured. Accurate control of the timing synchronization between high-voltage discharge and pulse emission is required.
Advantage:Effective for high impedance faults, with clear waveforms.
Principle:At the moment of high-voltage breakdown at the fault point (when the fault point is in a low impedance state), inject one (or more) low-voltage test pulses into the cable, and use the low-voltage pulse reflection method to accurately locate the low impedance reflection point at this time. By comparing the differences between the fault waveform and the full-length reference waveform (or multiple breakdown waveforms), the fault point reflection can be clearly identified.
Advantage:Waveform recognition is extremely simple and intuitive, almost unaffected by testing blind spots, and has high accuracy in locating high impedance faults, becoming an industry standard method.
Principle:Using a high-voltage generator to create an instantaneous short circuit (low resistance state) when a fault is triggered, while injecting low-voltage or high-voltage pulses for reflection measurement.
Advantage:It is the main means to solve high resistance and flashover faults.
Key equipment:High voltage generator (DC or impulse), pulse coupler (sampler).
Direct Flash Method:Directly apply high DC voltage to flashover faults.
Flash method:Apply high voltage through the energy storage capacitor to flashover high resistance faults.
Principle:Transmit low-voltage pulses to the cable and generate reflections when encountering discontinuous points of wave impedance (such as fault points, joints, and terminals). Record the time difference Δ t between the transmitted pulse and the reflected pulse.
Formula: Distance L=(v * Δ t)/2(v is the propagation speed of the pulse in the cable).
Advantage:Easy to operate, safe, effective against low resistance and open circuit faults, and capable of measuring the entire length.
Limitations:It is difficult to directly detect high resistance and flashover faults.
Low voltage pulse reflection method:
High voltage pulse method (flash method/direct flash method):
Secondary pulse method/Multiple pulse method (modern mainstream):
Arc reflection method:
Attenuation oscillation wave method:
Precise positioning: Accurately locate the fault point within the predetermined positioning range
Principle:Inject audio current signals of a specific frequency into the cable, and use an inductive receiver to detect the magnetic field strength of the signal along the path. At the fault point (especially short circuit or ground fault point), the magnetic field distribution will undergo a sudden change.
Applicable to:Path search, low impedance fault location, cable identification.
Principle:Suitable for faults with damaged protective layers or metallic grounding. Inject DC or low-frequency signals between the fault phase and the ground, and measure the step voltage with two probes on the ground near the fault point. The voltage difference is maximum directly above the fault point, with opposite polarity on both sides.
Applicable to:Grounding fault or low resistance fault of the outer sheath of buried cables.
Principle:Using high-voltage equipment to generate sound waves and electromagnetic pulses through periodic discharge at the fault point. The fixed-point instrument simultaneously receives sound signals and electromagnetic signals. When the probe approaches the fault point, clear discharge sound is heard, and the time difference between the acoustic and magnetic signals is minimized (or overlapped).
Key:The discharge energy should be large enough to produce detectable sound; Environmental noise interference should be minimized as much as possible.
Acoustic magnetic synchronization method (frequently used):
Step voltage method:
Audio induction method:

4、 Typical testing process
Clear information and security preparation:Understand cable type, voltage level, length, direction, and historical situation. Strictly implement safety measures such as power outage, electricity inspection, discharge, and hanging grounding wires.
Fault nature diagnosis:Use a megohmmeter, multimeter, etc. to preliminarily determine the type of fault (low resistance/high resistance/open circuit).
Path lookup (if needed):Use audio sensing method to accurately locate the cable laying path and depth.
Pre positioning (distance measurement):
Low resistance/open circuit fault: Prioritize using low voltage pulse method.
High resistance/flashover fault: Choose the high-voltage pulse method (impulse/direct flash) and combine it with the secondary pulse method/multiple pulse method/arc reflection method for distance measurement.
Accurate positioning:
Carefully detect the discharge sound along the cable path using the acoustic magnetic synchronization method near the pre positioning result.
For direct buried low resistance faults, the step voltage method can be used in conjunction.
Verification and repair:After positioning, excavate for verification (pay attention to safety), repair the fault, and conduct insulation tests to confirm the repair effect.

From the classic pulse reflection method to advanced secondary pulse method and attenuation wave method, its core technology always revolves around how to "see through" internal defects of cables more safely, quickly, and accurately. With the continuous breakthroughs in intelligence, integration, and online detection technology, cable fault testers will continue to play a core role in ensuring the smooth flow of power energy "blood vessels" and supporting the reliable operation of infrastructure. Mastering its principles and methods is a key skill for power practitioners to efficiently complete fault repair and improve operation and maintenance levels.
Hint:In practical applications, safety regulations should be strictly followed, and the most suitable testing methods and equipment combinations should be flexibly selected based on cable type, fault nature, and on-site environment (such as whether they are directly buried and whether there are interference sources)
