CO2 emissions have decreased from 2.2 million tons to 1.7 million tons
Siemens expects to save 20 million euros annually
Siemens solutions help customers save 521 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions
Since announcing the implementation of its carbon dioxide reduction plan last year, Siemens has made significant progress in reducing its carbon footprint over the past year. The company's carbon dioxide emissions decreased from 2.2 million tons in fiscal year 2014 (October 1, 2013 September 30, 2014) to 1.7 million tons in fiscal year 2016 (October 1, 2015 September 30, 2016). Among them, up to 200000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions reduction comes from Germany. In the 2016 fiscal year, Siemens' solutions also helped its customers reduce 521 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions, equivalent to over 60% of Germany's total annual carbon emissions.
In September 2015, Siemens announced that it would achieve a 50% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions by 2020 and be environmentally friendly by 2030. To achieve this decarbonization goal, Siemens is focusing on four areas of work. *By utilizing Siemens Energy Efficiency Program (EEP), we can effectively reduce the energy consumption of our own buildings and production facilities. Secondly, distributed energy systems (DES) are adopted in office buildings and production facilities to optimize energy expenditure. Thirdly, systematically replace the vehicles used by the company within its scope with low emission vehicles and promote the concept of electric transportation. Fourthly, we will continue to increase the adoption of low-carbon or even carbon free clean energy sources, such as wind and hydropower, in order to gradually transition to a clean energy mix.
Decarbonization is crucial for preventing climate change and its enormous consequences, "said Roland Busch, a member of the Siemens AG management committee responsible for the company's sustainable development." The Paris Agreement, which is committed to addressing climate change, has come into effect, and now it is necessary to fulfill this commitment with practical actions. The economy must continue to drive this process and significantly reduce carbon dioxide emissions in all areas
The cost investment in environmentally friendly technology is usually spread over several years and ultimately generates returns. For example, Siemens has invested 100 million euros to improve the energy efficiency of its buildings and production facilities, and the company expects to save 20 million euros in energy expenditure annually from 2020 onwards.
Siemens' environmental business portfolio integrates all of the company's technologies in renewable energy and energy efficiency, making significant contributions to climate protection. In the fiscal year 2016, the environmental protection related business portfolio generated sales revenue of 36 billion euros, accounting for 46% of Siemens' total revenue.
