Difference between globe valve, gate valve, and ball valve

Globe valves and gate valves are valve names classified differently, and it is not appropriate to discuss them together:
1. Classified by function and purpose
(1)Block valve: Block valve, also known as closed-circuit valve, is used to connect or block the medium in the pipeline. Block valves include gate valves, globe valves, plug valves, ball valves, butterfly valves, and diaphragms.
(2)Check valve: Check valve, also known as one-way valve or check valve, is used to prevent the backflow of medium in the pipeline. The bottom valve of the water pump for suction closure also belongs to the category of check valves.
(3)Safety valve: The function of safety valves is to prevent the medium pressure in pipelines or devices from exceeding the specified value, thereby achieving the purpose of safety protection.
(4)Regulating valves: Regulating valves include regulating valves, throttle valves, and pressure reducing valves, which are used to regulate the pressure, flow rate, and other parameters of the medium.
(5)Diverter valve: Diverter valves include various distribution valves and drain valves, which are used to distribute, separate, or mix media in pipelines.
6. Classify by structural features

The difference between gate valve and globe valve:The opening and closing component of a gate valve is a gate plate, and the direction of movement of the gate plate is perpendicular to the direction of the fluid. Gate valves can only be fully opened and fully closed, and are not suitable for regulation and throttling. The gate has two sealing surfaces, and the two sealing surfaces of the commonly used wedge gate valve form a wedge shape. The wedge angle varies with the valve parameters and is usually5oThe gate of a wedge gate valve can be made as a whole, called a rigid gate; It can also be made into a gate that can produce slight deformation to improve its processability and compensate for the deviation of the sealing surface angle during the processing. This type of gate is called an elastic gate.
When the gate valve is closed, the sealing surface can be sealed solely by the medium pressure, that is, the sealing surface of the gate is pressed against the valve seat on the other side by the medium pressure to ensure the sealing surface is sealed, which is called self sealing. Most gate valves use forced sealing, which means that when the valve is closed, external force must be used to forcefully press the gate plate against the valve seat to ensure the sealing performance of the sealing surface.

Gate valves have the following advantages:
1The fluid resistance is low, and the sealing surface is less susceptible to erosion and erosion by the medium.
2Opening and closing are relatively effortless.
3The flow direction of the medium is unrestricted, without disturbance or pressure reduction.

A globe valve refers to a valve in which the closing element (valve disc) moves along the centerline of the valve seat. According to the movement of the valve disc, the change in the valve seat opening is directly proportional to the stroke of the valve disc. Due to the relatively short opening or closing stroke of the valve stem and its highly reliable shut-off function, as well as the proportional relationship between the change in the valve seat opening and the stroke of the valve disc, this type of valve is very suitable for regulating flow. Therefore, this type of valve is very suitable for use as a cut-off, regulating, and throttling device.
The selection principle is:
1Globe valves should be used on pipelines or devices for high-temperature and high-pressure media. High temperature and high-pressure pipelines in thermal power plants, nuclear power plants, and petrochemical systems.
2On pipelines with lax flow resistance requirements. Places where pressure loss is not given much consideration.
3Small valves can be selected from needle valves, instrument valves, sampling valves, pressure gauge valves, etc.
4There is flow regulation or pressure regulation, but the requirement for regulation accuracy is not high, and the diameter of the pipeline is relatively small, such as nominal diameter≤50mmOn the pipeline, it is advisable to choose.

The obvious advantages of Zui are:
During the opening and closing process, the friction between the valve disc and the sealing surface of the valve body is smaller than that of a gate valve, making it wear-resistant.

The structure is complex, manufacturing and maintenance are difficult, and the cost is high.

f.The sealing surface is not easily scratched or worn, and the sealing performance is reliable with a long service life;

Gate valves and globe valves are different models of valves with different valve core structures, but gate valves do not belong to globe valves. The difference between the two types of valves lies in the direction of movement of the opening and closing components relative to the valve seat. The opening and closing component of a gate valve is the gate, and the valve that is driven by the valve stem to move the valve plate up and down is called a gate valve. Advantages and disadvantages of gate valves: The advantage is low fluid flow resistance; The required torque for opening and closing is small; The flow direction of the medium is not restricted; No water hammer phenomenon during opening and closing; The body structure is relatively simple and the manufacturing process is good. The disadvantage is that the external dimensions and installation height are relatively large; During the opening and closing process, there is relative friction and significant wear on the sealing surface. The opening and closing component of a globe valve is the valve disc, which is driven by the valve stem and moves up and down along the axis of the valve seat. A valve is called a globe valve. Advantages and disadvantages: The advantages are simple structure, small installation size, good sealing performance, and convenient maintenance of the sealing surface; The disadvantage is that the flow resistance of the medium is high and the direction is limited. Gate valve, also known as gate plate valve or gate valve, is a widely used type of valve. It controls the opening and closing of the valve by lifting and lowering the gate. The gate is perpendicular to the direction of the fluid, and changing the relative position between the gate and the valve seat can change the size of the channel. Bright stem gate valve Concealed stem gate valve According to the different movement of the valve stem during the opening and closing of the gate valve, there are two types of gate valves: clear stem type and concealed stem type. The thread of the stem of a rising stem gate valve is exposed outside the valve body. When opening the valve, the stem extends out of the handwheel. Its advantage is that the valve opening size can be determined based on the length of the stem extension. The length of contact between the stem and the medium is relatively small, and the threaded part is basically not affected by the corrosion of the medium. The disadvantage is that the height of the extension space is large. The thread of the concealed stem gate valve stem is intended to match the internal thread of the stem and the internal thread of the gate plate. When opening the valve, the stem only rotates without lifting up or down, while the gate plate rises along the thread of the stem. The advantage of a concealed stem gate valve is that it has a small outward extension space, but the disadvantage is that the valve opening cannot be determined based on the condition of the valve stem, and the valve stem thread is prone to corrosion when in contact with the medium for a long time. Gate valves have the advantages of low fluid resistance, constant flow direction of the medium, slow opening without water hammer phenomenon, and easy adjustment of flow rate. The disadvantages are complex structure, large size, long opening and closing time, and difficult maintenance of the sealing surface. Due to its widespread use in large-diameter water supply pipelines, it is also known as a water gate. (2) Ball valve Ball valves and plug valves are the same type of valve, except that their opening and closing components are spherical bodies with a through-hole, which rotate around the centerline of the valve stem to achieve the purpose of opening and closing.
