fluorescent lamp

(A type of lighting fixture)

edit

Fluorescent lamps, also known as traditional fluorescent lamps or low-pressure mercury lamps, use low-pressure mercury vapor to emit ultraviolet light after being electrified, thereby making the fluorescent powder emit visible light. Therefore, it belongs to low-pressure arc discharge light sources. In 1974, Philips of the Netherlands was the first to successfully develop a fluorescent powder that could emit red, green, and blue light that is sensitive to the human eye. The development and application of three primary color (also known as three primary color) phosphors is an important milestone in the development of fluorescent lamps.

Endless fluorescent lamps, also known as lamps, eliminate the filament and electrodes of traditional fluorescent lamps. They use the principle of electromagnetic coupling to excite mercury atoms from their original state to an excited state. Their emission principle is similar to that of traditional fluorescent lamps, with advantages such as long lifespan, high luminous efficiency, and good color rendering.

Historical records

After the 1950s, fluorescent lamps mostly used calcium halide phosphate, commonly known as halogen powder. Halogen powder is cheap, but its luminous efficiency is not high enough, thermal stability is poor, light attenuation is large, and the luminous flux maintenance rate is low. Therefore, it is not suitable for compact fluorescent lamps with small tube diameters.

In 1974, Philips of the Netherlands first successfully developed a three color fluorescent powder (rare earth element three color fluorescent powder) by mixing yttrium oxide (emitting red light with a peak wavelength of 611nm), magnesium aluminate (emitting green light with a peak wavelength of 541nm), and barium magnesium aluminate (emitting blue light with a peak wavelength of 450nm) in a certain proportion, which can emit red, green, and blue light that is sensitive to the human eye. Its luminous efficiency is high (with an average luminous efficiency of over 80lm/W, about 5 times that of incandescent lamps), color temperature is 2500K-6500K, and color rendering index is around 85. Using it as a raw material for fluorescent lamps can greatly save energy, which is called energy-saving fluorescent lamps. The origin. It can be said that the development and application of rare earth element tricolor phosphors is an important milestone in the development of fluorescent lamps. Without tricolor phosphors, it would not be possible to have today's new generation of compact energy-saving fluorescent lamps with small tube diameters. But rare earth element tricolor phosphors also have their drawbacks, and their biggest drawback is their high price.

Luminous principle

From the luminescence mechanism of fluorescent lamps, it can be seen that fluorescent powder plays a crucial role in the quality of fluorescent lamps.

Fluorescent lamps belong to gas discharge light sources, and the volt ampere characteristics of gas discharge light sources are shown in Figure (b). The A to D on the curve represent the low light region of non self-sustaining discharge; D to E are transition zones; E to F are normal glow discharge areas, such as neon lights; F-G is the abnormal glow discharge zone; G~K is the normal arc discharge zone, such as sunlight.

Neon lights are glow discharge, while fluorescent lights are arc discharge. Before the fluorescent lamp is lit or arc burned, it has a high input impedance because there are basically no conductive ions at this time. Therefore, a high voltage Uns will be applied to the lamp tube, which is the rated starting voltage for lighting the lamp tube. After normal operation, the voltage applied to the lamp tube will decrease to the working voltage Uop, and the working current of the lamp will be obtained from xb (impedance of the ballast at the working frequency) and the following equation

formula

The voltage and current in the equation refer to the effective values, so it can be concluded that the power consumed by the lamp is

Pi=UopIop

The rated starting voltage of the lamp at 50 ° F is provided by the manufacturer, but in order to ensure that the lamp can still light up in the event of damage, the actual starting voltage should be increased by at least 10% of the manufacturer's given value. The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) specifies the Uop and Iop values for different types of fluorescent lamps, so manufacturers must meet the maximum power rating of the lamps during production.

The Uop and Iop values of the selected type of lamp can be obtained from the ANSI specification, and then the required Uns value can be obtained from the manufacturer to determine the impedance xb of the ballast from the above equation. In electronic ballasts, this impedance value is determined by the capacitor and can be obtained from the following equation

Equation 2

The CbT in the formula refers to the equivalent capacitor connected in series with the lamp tube, as the lamp tube may be driven by two capacitors connected together.

By selecting capacitors with different impedances,

It is possible to operate the lamp at a power higher or lower than the rated power of the model, that is, the lamp can operate at any given power, including limit values, through any combination of Uop and Iop. In this way, at any power level, Iop can be arbitrarily specified and Uop can be calculated using the * formula. The impedance of the electronic ballast can be obtained using the * formula, and the capacitance value can be obtained using the second formula.

Although any fluorescent lamp can operate at a higher rated power specified in this ANSI specification, its lifespan will significantly decrease. Even if the lamp works at the specified power, its lifespan will be shorter than the expected time, because the expected time is tested by the manufacturer under certain current, voltage, and temperature environments.

Model classification

Traditional type

Common fluorescent lamps include:

(1) Straight tube fluorescent lamp. This type of fluorescent lamp belongs to double ended fluorescent lamps. Common nominal powers include 4W, 6W,

8W, 12W, 15W, 20W, 30W, 36W, 40W, 65W, 80W, 85W, and 125W. Pipe diameters are T5, T8, T10, and T12. Use G5 and G13 for the lamp head. T5 color rendering index>30, good color rendering, ideal lighting effect for colorful items and environments, low light attenuation, long lifespan, with an average lifespan of 10000 hours. Suitable for use in colorful occasions such as clothing, department stores, supermarkets, food, fruits, pictures, display windows, etc. T8 color light has good brightness, energy efficiency, and lifespan, making it suitable for use in hotels, offices, shops, hospitals, libraries, and homes where simple colors but high brightness are required.

For the convenience of installation, cost reduction, and safety reasons, many ballasts for straight tube fluorescent lamps are installed in brackets to form self ballasted fluorescent lamps.

(2) Colored straight tube fluorescent lamp. Common nominal powers include 20W, 30W, and 40W. Use T4, T5, T8 for pipe diameter. Use G5 and G13 for the lamp head. Color fluorescent lamps have low luminous flux and are suitable for decoration and color display in shop windows, advertisements, or similar places.

(3) Circular fluorescent lamp. Apart from their shape, there is not much difference between circular fluorescent lamps and straight tube fluorescent lamps. Common nominal powers include 22W, 32W, and 40W. Use G10q for the lamp head. Mainly provided as supporting light sources for ceiling lights, pendant lights, etc., for household, shopping mall and other lighting purposes.

(4) Single ended compact energy-saving fluorescent lamp. The lamp tube, ballast, and lamp head of this type of fluorescent lamp are tightly integrated (the ballast is placed inside the lamp head), and they cannot be disassembled except for destructive strikes, so they are called "compact" fluorescent lamps. Since there is no need for an external ballast and the driving circuit is also inside the ballast, this type of fluorescent lamp is also a self ballasted fluorescent lamp and an internally started fluorescent lamp. The entire lamp is directly connected to the power grid through E27 or other lamp heads, which can easily replace incandescent lamps.

Most of these fluorescent lamps use rare earth element tricolor phosphors, which have energy-saving functions. The following table lists the comparison between energy-saving fluorescent lamps and incandescent lamps with similar luminous flux.

Energy saving fluorescent lamp power (W) 5 7 9 11 13 18 36 45 65 85 105

  • According to the diameter of the pipe

(1) Straight tube fluorescent tubes are divided into specifications such as T12, T10, T8, T6, T5, T4, T3, etc. according to their diameter. The combination of "T+number" in the specifications represents the millimeter value of the pipe diameter. Its meaning is: one T=1/8 inch, one inch is 25.4mm; the number represents the number of T. For example, T12=25.4mm * 1/8 * 12=38mm.

(2) The relationship between the diameter of fluorescent tubes and their electrical parameters:

1. The thinner the diameter of the fluorescent tube, the higher the light efficiency and the better the energy-saving effect.

2. The thinner the diameter of the fluorescent tube, the higher the ignition voltage, and the higher the requirements for the technical performance of the ballast.

Fluorescent tubes with a diameter greater than T8 (including T8) have lower ignition voltage. Compared to 220V, 50Hz AC power, it conforms to the law that the ignition voltage is less than 1/2 of the power supply voltage. Inductive ballasts can be used for ignition and start-up operation.

Fluorescent tubes with a diameter smaller than T8 have a higher ignition voltage when lit. Compared to 220V, 50Hz AC power, it does not comply with the law that the ignition voltage is less than 1/2 of the power supply voltage. Inductive ballasts cannot be used for ignition operation. Fluorescent tubes with a diameter less than T8 must be matched with electronic ballasts. By using an electronic ballast, a high voltage is generated to ignite the fluorescent tube. Afterwards, the electronic ballast drives the fluorescent tube to ignite and operate.
