Application of hydrogen sulfide detector in sewage treatment process
Date: 2025-11-16Read: 11
Hydrogen sulfide gas has a strong odor of rotten eggs. When the concentration is low, it can irritate the eyes and respiratory tract. When the concentration is high, it may cause suffocation, coma, and even death. Short term exposure to high concentrations of hydrogen sulfide gas may cause toxic reactions, while long-term exposure can cause serious damage to various organs of the human body. Therefore, ensuring that the concentration of hydrogen sulfide is controlled within a safe range and its concentration can be monitored in a timely manner is an important task in industrial safety management.

  Hydrogen sulfide detectorWorking principle:
1. Electrochemical sensors
Electrochemical sensors are currently one of the widely used hydrogen sulfide detection technologies. Its working principle is based on the chemical reaction between hydrogen sulfide gas and the electrolyte inside the sensor, generating an electric current signal. Sensors determine the concentration of hydrogen sulfide by measuring the magnitude of the current. Electrochemical sensors are widely used in many applications due to their high sensitivity, low power consumption, and long service life.
2. Semiconductor sensors
Semiconductor sensors utilize the response characteristics of certain oxide semiconductor materials (such as SnO ₂, ZnO, etc.) to detect hydrogen sulfide. The concentration change of hydrogen sulfide gas will affect the conductivity of semiconductor materials, so the gas concentration can be calculated based on the change in conductivity. This sensor has a lower cost, but its sensitivity and stability are not as good as electrochemical sensors.
3. Infrared sensor
Infrared sensors detect gas concentration by utilizing the absorption characteristics of hydrogen sulfide gas towards specific wavelengths of infrared light. Infrared sensors can accurately measure the concentration of hydrogen sulfide and have good selectivity. The advantage of this technology is that it does not require contact with gas, thus reducing sensor pollution and loss, but its equipment cost is relatively high.
4. Chemical sensors
Chemical sensors use the properties of hydrogen sulfide reacting with specific chemicals to detect gas concentrations. When hydrogen sulfide reacts with chemical substances on the surface of the sensor, the reaction can cause a color change or produce other measurable physical quantities (such as voltage, light absorption, etc.), thereby achieving concentration measurement. This type of sensor has a lower cost, but its sensitivity and response speed are not as good as other sensors.
Application areas of hydrogen sulfide detector:
1. Oil and gas industry
The leakage of hydrogen sulfide gas is a common safety hazard in the extraction, transportation, and refining processes of oil and gas. To ensure the safety of workers and equipment, it is necessary to install detectors in places such as oil drilling platforms and refineries.
2. Chemical industry
Many chemical synthesis processes involve the production of hydrogen sulfide gas, especially in the production of fertilizer products such as sulfuric acid, synthetic ammonia, pesticides, etc. In order to avoid the harm of hydrogen sulfide to employees and the environment, real-time monitoring must be carried out.
3. Sewage treatment
During the sewage treatment process, especially in areas such as anaerobic reaction tanks, hydrogen sulfide is often released into the air. In order to protect the health of workers, sewage treatment plants must install detectors.
4. Food and pharmaceutical industry
In some specific food and pharmaceutical production processes, the use of hydrogen sulfide may be involved. Can help detect the concentration of hydrogen sulfide in the air to ensure environmental safety.
