Case study of online monitoring of blast furnace gas in a certain steel group in Yunnan

1、 Background Overview

Blast furnace gas is an important byproduct generated during the steel smelting process, rich in various gas components such as CO, CO ₂, H ₂, CH ₄, etc. It is widely used in power generation, heating, and various industrial furnaces. To ensure its efficient and safe recycling, real-time monitoring of key parameters such as gas composition, calorific value, and oxygen content has become a key link in optimizing processes, reducing energy consumption, and ensuring production safety.


2、 Project Introduction

The project is located in a large steel enterprise in Yunnan. The company was established in 1998 and has now formed a pattern of multiple industries, including mining, hydropower, real estate, and building materials, as well as chemical, construction, logistics, and service industries.

The composition of blast furnace gas directly reflects the operating status and smelting efficiency of the blast furnace. For example, abnormal H ₂ content can indicate whether there is a risk of water leakage in the furnace body, while the CO ₂/CO ratio is directly related to the gas reduction efficiency. Therefore, real-time monitoring of gas composition and calorific value changes not only helps optimize blast furnace operations and reduce fuel consumption, but also provides accurate combustion control parameters for downstream users (such as boilers, hot blast stoves, etc.), thereby improving the overall energy efficiency management level.


3、 Implementation plan

To meet the real-time monitoring needs of customers for the composition and calorific value of blast furnace gas, Sifang Instrument has deployed a Gasboard-9021EX online gas analysis system for them. The system is capable of continuously measuring the concentrations of key gases such as CO, CO ₂, CH ₄, H ₂, O ₂, etc., and automatically calculating real-time heating values to help customers improve gas utilization efficiency, achieve energy conservation, consumption reduction, and safe production.

Gasboard-9021EX

(1) System Overview

Gasboard-9021EX is designed specifically for the specific working conditions of dust and moisture in blast furnace gas. It consists of three parts: pretreatment unit, control unit, and analysis unit. It is controlled by PLC program and automatically completes operations such as water washing, sampling, and fault handling. It can achieve 24-hour unmanned operation, ensuring long-term stable, accurate, and continuous automatic online operation of the system.

  • 7 * 24 continuous online monitoring, no need for manual duty, low maintenance, and low operating costs.

  • Can accurately measure trace amounts of H ₂ concentration.

4、 Project Value

By deploying the Gasboard-9021EX system from Sifang Instrument, the customer has achieved continuous monitoring of multiple key parameters of blast furnace gas. The real-time data provided by the system helps operators accurately adjust the CO/CO ₂ ratio and distribution, optimize air intake and material distribution strategies, effectively protect the blast furnace body, reduce coke iron ratio and comprehensive energy consumption. In addition, accurate monitoring of H ₂ content provides a reliable basis for timely detection of furnace leakage, significantly improving production safety levels.
