What is the difference between YJV cable and VV cable? Which is better?
Date: 2020-01-15Read: 6

YJV cable and VV cable have similar functions, but their differences are also very obvious. Below, we will provide a detailed explanation of the differences between the two.

1. Different insulation materials

The insulation material used for YJV cables is cross-linked polyethylene, while VV cables are made of polyvinyl chloride material. Due to the absence of chlorine in the insulation of YJV cables, a large amount of chlorine gas (chlorine is a toxic gas) will not be produced during combustion. Compared to ordinary polyvinyl chloride, cross-linked polyethylene insulation has stronger high temperature resistance, environmental friendliness, and better performance.

2. Different working temperatures

Conventional YJV cables are allowed to operate at a high temperature of 90 ℃, and during a short circuit (within 5 seconds), the high temperature should not exceed 250 ℃; Conventional VV cables allow high operating temperatures of around 65 ℃, and during short circuits (within 5 seconds), the high temperature does not exceed 160 ℃. The difference in high operating temperatures determines that YJV has a higher current carrying capacity, and also determines that YJV cables have better overall performance than VV cables.

3. Different working voltage ranges

Normally, YJV cables operate within a voltage range of 6-500KV, while VV cables operate within 1-6KV. Therefore, VV cables are generally used in low voltage environments, while YJV covers high, medium, and low voltage environments. This is also why YJV cable manufacturing processes require a higher level of expertise.

4. Price and lifespan

The price of YJV cable is slightly higher than that of VV cable for the same specifications and models, which may be the reason why VV cable is still alive. However, YJV cables have a longer service life, are more resistant to high temperatures, and are safer. In terms of long-term and safety factors, using YJV cables is more cost-effective.

Choosing YJV cables for residential projects is safer and more environmentally friendly. If the budget is really limited, you can choose to use VV cables in non residential areas and places with low voltage and temperature requirements. In summary, the general trend is that YJV cables are gradually replacing VV cables.

YJV is better than VV in the long run (with longer service life, etc.), but more expensive than VV. From the height allowed for short circuit: YJV is 250 degrees, VV is 160 degrees, 140 degrees.

From the perspective of technical and economic indicators, the three core YJV cable has higher parameters than the VV cable. The use of YJV in civil buildings has a higher current carrying capacity than VV, and more importantly, in the event of an electrical fire, its insulation material does not contain chlorine, so it will not produce toxic gases during combustion. So that means VV has poorer environmental performance.

VV has been basically replaced by YJV in civil, nuclear and other fields, but it is still widely used in many industrial enterprises due to its low price.

How to distinguish?

A simple method is that the insulation layer of YJV cable is relatively transparent, and the copper wires inside can be seen, while the insulation layer of VV cable is not transparent.

YJV: Copper core cross-linked polyethylene insulated polyvinyl chloride sheathed power cable

VV: Copper core PVC insulated PVC sheathed power cable

YJ: Represents the use of cross-linked polyethylene as the material

V: The representative material used is polyvinyl chloride
