The technological transition of SF6 gas online monitoring from "passive response" to "intelligent warning"
Date: 2025-12-12Read: 6
As the core insulation medium of high-voltage electrical equipment, SF6 (sulfur hexafluoride) is widely used in GIS, circuit breakers and other equipment due to its excellent insulation and arc extinguishing performance. However, its global warming potential is 23500 times that of carbon dioxide, and once leaked, it not only threatens the safety of the power grid, but also has long-term environmental impacts. In this context,SF6 gas online monitoring technology is undergoing a profound transformation from traditional manual inspection to intelligent and precise monitoring.

1、 Current situation: Multi technology integration to solve monitoring problems
Traditional monitoring methods such as barometers and density relays suffer from high false alarm rates and data isolation due to temperature fluctuations and mechanical accuracy limitations. For example, a barometer is prone to failure when the ambient temperature changes dramatically, while semiconductor sensors have a short lifespan and a rising false alarm rate over time. Currently, mainstream technology has shifted towards multi parameter fusion monitoring:
1. Laser spectroscopy technology: Based on Lambert Beer's law, accurate measurement of SF6 concentration and decomposition products is achieved by detecting the absorption characteristics of gases towards specific wavelengths of light. The sensitivity of the laser detector can reach 1 μ L/L, far below the safety regulations limit, and supports dynamic threshold adjustment, with a false alarm rate as low as one in ten million.
2. Infrared detection technology: By utilizing the absorption characteristics of gas molecules towards infrared light, combined with temperature and humidity compensation algorithms, SF6 purity, moisture content, and pressure can be monitored simultaneously, with a detection range covering 0-2000 μ L/L and a response time of ≤ 50 milliseconds.
3. Distributed bus system: using CAN bus technology to replace traditional 485 communication, supporting synchronous transmission of 110 monitoring points, with a transmission distance of up to 10 kilometers, reducing the false alarm rate to one ten thousandth of traditional methods, and compatible with extended functions such as gas density and micro water monitoring.
2、 Trend: Intelligent and Green Dual Wheel Drive
In the future, SF6 gas online monitoring technology will present two core trends:
1. Intelligent warning: By using AI algorithms to deeply learn historical data, establish a device status prediction model, and achieve a leap from "post alarm" to "pre alarm". For example, by combining the correlation between SF6 decomposition products (such as SO2, H2S) and discharge energy, internal insulation faults of equipment can be diagnosed in advance.
2. Green alternative technology: With the tightening of international environmental regulations, the monitoring demand for SF6 alternative gases (such as C5F10O, dry air) has surged. New sensors need to adapt to the characteristics of mixed gases, such as developing a dedicated infrared detection module for C5F10O to ensure both monitoring accuracy and environmental friendliness.
3、 Conclusion: The technological mission of safeguarding the security of the power grid and the future of the Earth
The SF6 gas online monitoring technology has been upgraded from single parameter detection to a multi-dimensional and intelligent comprehensive monitoring system. According to QYResearch's prediction, the global market size will reach 430 million US dollars by 2030, with a compound annual growth rate of 8.2%. With the integration of IoT and 5G communication technology, future monitoring systems will achieve real-time mapping of device status across the entire station, providing key support for building a green and smart grid. In this technological revolution, Chinese manufacturers are gradually occupying a dominant position in the global market through localized innovation and cost advantages.
