Hand in hand teaching! Integrated radar water level gauge, from beginner to proficient, full guide
Date: 2025-10-22Read: 10
Integrated radar water level gaugeIt is a non-contact water level measurement device that integrates radar detection, data processing, and power communication functions. It relies on the principle of high-frequency electromagnetic wave ranging to achieve high-precision water level monitoring. Its core working mode is to emit high-frequency electromagnetic waves to the water surface through an antenna, and the electromagnetic waves are received after being reflected by the water surface. The system calculates the distance from the equipment to the water surface based on the propagation time and velocity of the electromagnetic waves, and converts it into the actual water level value based on the installation height.
This device adopts high-frequency millimeter wave radar technology, with shorter wavelengths and stronger energy concentration. Combined with a narrow antenna angle design, it can effectively reduce the interference of environmental factors such as water vapor, dust, and water surface fluctuations. For example, a 60GHz high-frequency millimeter wave radar with a wavelength of only about 5mm, coupled with an antenna angle of ± 8 °, can achieve a measurement accuracy of ± 3mm within a range of 0.2-10m in complex environments, and the maximum range can be extended to 12m.
Integrated radar water level gaugeOperation steps:
1、 Preparation before installation
Check equipment:
Confirm that the model, range, power supply voltage, and other parameters of the radar water level gauge meet the on-site requirements.
Check if the appearance of the equipment is intact and if the antenna surface is clean and undamaged.
Select installation location:
The installation position should face the water surface to ensure that there is no shelter within the radar beam range (such as branches, bridges, floating objects, turbulence, foam, etc.).
Avoid installation in water inlet, water outlet, areas with rapid water flow or a lot of foam.
The installation height should be at least 0.3~0.5 meters higher than the highest water level to ensure that the measurement range covers the actual water level changes.
It is recommended to install it on still water wells, logging wells, or installation brackets to reduce the impact of water surface fluctuations.
2、 Equipment installation
Fixed equipment:
Use a matching bracket or flange to horizontally and securely install the water level gauge in the designated position.
Ensure that the radar antenna is vertically aligned with the water surface to avoid tilting.
Wiring connection:
Connect the power cord correctly according to the wiring diagram (usually DC 12-24V or AC 220V).
Connect signal output lines (such as 4-20mA, RS485 Modbus, LoRa, 4G, etc.) to data acquisition terminals or monitoring systems.
Ensure that the wiring is secure, and take waterproof and moisture-proof measures (such as using waterproof connectors).
3、 Power on and basic settings
Power on startup:
Connect the power, the device enters self-test and startup mode, and the indicator light flashes normally.
View initial reading:
Observe the device's built-in display screen (if any) or read the current water level/distance value through the upper computer software.
Parameter settings (can be configured through buttons, infrared remote control, or software):
Range setting: Set the measurement range (such as 0-5m).
Blind spot setting: Set the closest distance that the radar cannot measure (usually 0.1~0.3m).
Unit setting: Select the water level unit (m, cm, mm, etc.).
Output settings: Configure the analog quantity (4-20mA) to correspond to the water level range, or set the communication protocol (such as Modbus address, baud rate).
Damping/filtering settings: Set damping time based on water surface fluctuations to ensure stable output.
Zero/full point calibration:
Dry Calibration: Set the current distance to "full range" or "zero water level" when there is no water or when the air level is known.
Actual water level calibration: When the accurate water level is known (such as measured with a ruler), calibrate the device reading to the actual value.
4、 Operation and monitoring
Observe the operating status:
Check if the indicator lights are functioning properly (power, operation, alarm, etc.).
Confirm that the output signal is stable and the data is continuous.
Data reading:
Real time viewing of water level data through local display screens, data collectors, SCADA systems, or cloud platforms.
Alarm settings (if supported):
Set high and low water level alarm thresholds, triggering sound and light or remote alarms when the water level exceeds the limit.
5、 Maintenance and Precautions
Regular inspection:
Check if the equipment is securely fixed and if the wiring is intact.
Clean the radar antenna surface to avoid dust, spider webs, frost, and other attachments that may affect the measurement.
Avoid interference:
Stay away from strong electromagnetic interference sources.
Avoid parallel installation of multiple radar water level gauges at close range to prevent signal crosstalk.
Lightning protection:
In areas with frequent lightning strikes, lightning protection grounding should be done for power and signal lines.
Power outage maintenance:
Before any maintenance or adjustment, be sure to disconnect the power supply first.
