The difference between ultrasonic level gauge and radar level gauge
Date: 2023-03-28Read: 8

Ultrasonic level gaugeDifference from radar level gauge

1.The principle is different. Ultrasonic level gauges use sound waves, while radar level gauges use electromagnetic waves.

Ultrasonic level gauge:

Ultrasonic level gaugeDuring operation, high-frequency pulse sound waves are generated by a transducer(probe)Issued, encountered with the object being tested(water surface)The surface is reflected, and the reflected echo is returned by the same transducer(probe)Receive and convert into electrical signals. The time between pulse transmission and reception(The motion time of sound waves)The distance of sound wave transmission is proportional to the distance from the transducer to the surface of the objectSCompared to sound speedCAnd transmission timeTThe relationship between them can be represented by a formula:S= CⅩT/2

The installation of ultrasonic level gauges must consider the blind spot issue of ultrasonic level gauges. When the liquid level enters the blind zone, the ultrasonic transmitter cannot measure the liquid level, so when determining the range of the ultrasonic level gauge, it is necessary to leave a margin50During installation, the transmitter probe must be raised above the centimeter allowancezuihigh liquid level50About centimeters. This is the only way to ensure accurate monitoring of the liquid level and ensure the safety of the ultrasonic level gauge

Ultrasonic level gaugeThe biggest difference between the two is that they use sound waves and radar uses electromagnetic waves. Due to the much stronger penetration and directionality of ultrasonic waves compared to electromagnetic waves

radar level gauge: Launch-reflection-Reception is the basic working principle of radar level gauges. The antenna of the radar sensor emits electromagnetic wave signals in the form of a beam,The emitted wave reflects off the surface of the tested material,The reflected echo signal is still received by the antenna. Each point in the emitted and reflected beams is collected using ultrasonic sampling method. The signal is processed by an intelligent processor to determine the distance between the medium and the probe,Send the terminal display for display, call the police,Operation, etc

2.The temperature and pressure of the medium used are different:
Ultrasonic level gaugeCan only be used for atmospheric pressure vessels, and the temperature at the probe should not exceed80The speed of sound waves is greatly affected by temperature and pressure. The radar level gauge is an electromagnetic wave that is not affected by vacuum and has a wide range of applications for medium temperature and pressure.
3.Different application scenarios

Due to the different measurement principles of ultrasound and radar, their application scenarios are also different.radar level gaugeElectromagnetic waves are used, which are influenced by the dielectric constant of the measured substance, while ultrasonic waves are mechanical waves, which are influenced by the density of the measured medium. So when measuring substances with very low dielectric constants, the measurement effect of radar level gauges will be greatly reduced, and it is not suitable to use radar level gauges for measurement.radar level gaugeThe measurement range of the ultrasonic level gauge is much larger than that of the ultrasonic level gauge. Radar emits electromagnetic waves, which can be measured without the need for propagation media. Ultrasonic waves are sound waves and mechanical waves that require the use of propagation media for propagation. Therefore, the ultrasonic level gauge cannot be used in vacuum, high vapor content or foam liquid level conditions.

4. Ultrasonic level gaugeThere is a temperature limit, and generally the temperature at the probe cannot exceed80And the speed of sound waves is greatly affected by temperature. Ultrasonic level gauges are greatly affected by pressure and generally require0.3MPaInternally, because sound waves rely on vibration to emit, the sound producing components will be affected when the pressure is too high. When there is a lot of fog or dust in the measurement environment, ultrasonic level gauges cannot measure well.Compared with it, radar uses electromagnetic waves and is not affected by vacuum. It has a wide range of applications for medium temperature and pressure. With the emergence of high-frequency radar, its application range has become even wider, while ultrasonic level gauges are more limited.

5The emission methods of the two waves are different. For example, ultrasonic waves are emitted through the vibration of piezoelectric materials, so ultrasonic level gauges cannot be used in high-pressure or negative pressure situations, and are generally only used in atmospheric pressure containers. Radar level gauges can be used in high-pressure process tanks.

6Different precision:radar level gaugeHigher accuracy than ultrasonic level gauges.
But whether it is a radar level gauge or an ultrasonic level gauge, when installing it on the tank, do not install it at the feed inlet, do not install it near the ladder, and keep it away from the tank wall300to500mmDistance to prevent echo interference. In situations where there is stirring and large liquid level fluctuations, it is also necessary to choose a suitable installation method. Radar has a larger emission angle than ultrasonic waves, and non-contact radar is not recommended for small or slender containers. Generally, guided wave radar is recommended. Finally, there is the issue of accuracy. Of course, the accuracy of radar is definitely higher than that of ultrasonic waves. High precision radar is definitely used on storage tanks, rather than ultrasonic waves.

7Radar level gauges come in horn, pole, and cable types and can be applied to different measurement conditions. Therefore, compared to ultrasonic level gauges, radar level gauges can be applied to more complex working conditions.

8In terms of price, compared to ultrasonic level gauges, radar level gauges are relatively more expensive. Of course, the price of some large range ultrasonic waves is also not low, such as6~70The range of meters is too large for radar level gauges, so ultrasonic level gauges can only be selected
