It is said online that the people of the whole country are praying for blessings for Guangdong, and the people of Guangdong are looking forward to the early arrival of the typhoon for a good holiday. So, how does the nuclear power plant resist strong typhoons and ensure safe power transmission?According to the Guangdong Meteorological Observatory, Typhoon Mangkhut entered the South China Sea on the morning of the 15th and will make landfall in the coastal areas from Taishan to Maoming on the night of the 16th. Currently, the wind force is a strong typhoon level of 15.
The intensity, wide range, and destructive power of 'Mangkhut' will exceed that of 'Pigeon' and 'Paka' in 2017, and may become one of the severe typhoons affecting Guangdong in the past twenty years.
The fierce "mountain bamboo" is attacking the coastal areas of Guangdong. Many nuclear fans are asking, 'How do coastal nuclear power plants withstand strong typhoons?'?
The impact of typhoons was already considered in the early stages of construction for nuclear power plants
When selecting a location for a nuclear power plant, it is necessary to analyze the tropical cyclones (typhoons) that have occurred within a range of 300 to 400 kilometers in the plant site area, and calculate the possible evolution path of major storms and typhoons that may cause significant damage in the sea area of the plant site. In the design, sufficient flood prevention capacity should be left in a targeted manner. Therefore, most coastal nuclear power plants are located within the bay area, which has mountains as barriers and shallow water levels, making it less likely to cause strong winds and waves.
The design standards for nuclear power plants are very strict, and the reactor building structure has high stiffness and strength, which can withstand the attack of typhoons. In addition to setting up multiple backup power sources within the nuclear island, an emergency power plant and diesel engine warehouse have also been constructed. Even if the factory area is flooded, the emergency power supply can still be activated to meet the needs of water replenishment and power supply in the event of a power outage, further improving the safety level.
How do nuclear power plants withstand strong typhoons?
Each nuclear power base in our country has a mature typhoon warning and defense mechanism. Before a typhoon makes landfall, nuclear power bases generally take the following measures:
(1) Inspect and test emergency facilities, including satellites, emergency lighting, emergency related supplies, etc; Clean up loose materials on site and fix them. Protect the doors and windows of each factory building and dormitory, and take measures such as posting tape, explosion-proof film, and installing wooden boards to ensure the safety of the factory building.
(2) Issue typhoon emergency notice, prohibit all outdoor and water operations on nuclear power sites, and inspect the typhoon prevention measures for tall equipment on site.
(3) Evacuate non emergency personnel based on the typhoon situation and arrange for staff to be on duty 24 hours a day.
With these guarantees, China's coastal nuclear power plants have successfully survived multiple typhoon attacks, ensuring the safe and stable operation of nuclear power units.
