Analysis methods and application fields of X-ray diffractometer
Date: 2025-12-08Read: 6
X-ray diffractometer is an analytical tool used to study the crystal structure of substances, widely applied in fields such as materials science, chemistry, physics, and biology. It detects the crystal structure, lattice constant, crystal orientation, and other information of a substance by analyzing its X-ray diffraction pattern. Not only can it be used to study crystal structures, but it can also be applied to the research of amorphous materials, nanomaterials, and so on.
1、 Analysis method
1. Powder X-ray diffraction
Powder X-ray diffraction isX-ray diffractometerOne of the common applications, suitable for analyzing powder or non single crystal samples. Samples are usually ground into fine powder and then placed on the sample stage of the instrument. Due to the different orientations of the grains in the sample, the X-rays diffracted from all directions will be averaged to generate an overall diffraction pattern. By analyzing the positions and intensities of these diffraction peaks, the crystal structure, lattice constants, phase composition, and other structural information of the sample can be inferred.
2. Single crystal X-ray diffraction
Single crystal X-ray diffraction is mainly used to accurately determine the three-dimensional crystal structure of a single crystal. Unlike powder diffraction, single crystal X-ray diffraction requires the sample to be a single crystal. By irradiating single crystal samples with X-rays and recording diffraction patterns from different directions, combined with computer algorithms, the three-dimensional structure of the crystal can be accurately determined. This method is commonly used for structural analysis of complex molecules, proteins, and other macromolecules.
3. Quantitative phase analysis
It can also be used for quantitative phase analysis, especially in multiphase samples. The diffraction peaks of different crystal phases have different intensities, and by comparing the relative intensities of different peaks, the proportion of different crystal phases can be quantitatively analyzed. This method is widely used in fields such as materials science, mineralogy, metallurgy, etc., and can reveal the content and distribution of different phases in the sample.
4. Grain size and stress analysis
By analyzing the width of X-ray diffraction peaks, the grain size of the sample can be estimated. According to the shape and width of the diffraction peaks, the Schell formula can be used to calculate the grain size. In addition, it can also be used to study the residual stress inside materials. The displacement and deformation analysis of diffraction patterns can reveal the internal stress state of samples, especially in stress analysis of metals and alloys, which has important applications.

2、 Application Fields
1. Materials Science: X-ray diffractometers are widely used in the development and quality control of new materials in materials science. For example, studying the crystal structure, defect analysis, and phase transition of high-temperature superconducting materials, semiconductor materials, and ceramic materials.
2. Chemistry and chemical engineering: plays a crucial role in chemical synthesis, and can be used to detect and confirm the crystal structure of chemical substances. For example, structural identification of drug molecules, crystal structure analysis of catalysts, etc.
3. Mineralogy and Geology: In the field of mineralogy and geology, it can be used for the analysis of ore and rock samples, helping to study the types, crystal structures, mineral compositions, and metamorphic processes of different minerals.
4. Biology: In biological research, it is used to analyze the three-dimensional structure of large molecules such as proteins and DNA, especially in the process of drug development, to help study how molecules bind with drug molecules and develop more effective treatment plans.
X-ray diffractometer is an important analytical tool widely used in scientific research, industry, and production fields. By analyzing the diffraction pattern of the sample, rich material structure information can be provided to help researchers understand the microstructure, crystal defects, phase composition, and other characteristics of the material. With the continuous advancement of technology, its applications in various fields will become more extensive, especially in areas such as new materials, life sciences, and environmental monitoring, which are playing an increasingly important role.
