When high-energy X-rays with energy higher than the binding energy of the inner layer electrons of an atom collide with the atom, they expel an inner layer electron and create a hole, causing the entire atomic system to be in an unstable state. When the outer layer electrons transition to the hole, a photoelectron is generated, and the ejected photon may be absorbed again and expelled from another outer layer secondary photoelectron, resulting in the Auger effect, also known as the secondary photoelectric effect or non radiative effect. The secondary photoelectrons expelled are called Auger electrons.
