Introduction to Ethylene Oxide
Ethylene oxide (EO, C2H4O) is a colorless and flammable gas at room temperature and pressure, and a colorless and easily flowing liquid at low temperatures. There is a smell of ether and a pungent odor at high concentrations. It is a broad-spectrum and highly effective gas disinfectant with mild anesthetic properties. It has strong penetration power for disinfecting items, can reach deep into the item, and can kill several pathogenic microorganisms, including bacterial reproductive bodies, spores, viruses, and fungi. Both gases and liquids have strong bactericidal effects, with gases having a stronger effect, so they are often used.
Ethylene oxide is widely used in medical disinfection and industrial sterilization. Commonly used for gas fumigation disinfection of food, textiles, and other materials that cannot be disinfected by other methods, such as leather, cotton products, synthetic fabrics, precision instruments, biological products, paper, books, documents, certain drugs, rubber products, etc.
Ethylene oxide is a central nervous system inhibitor, stimulant, and plasma toxin, with higher toxicity to humans and animals than carbon tetrachloride and chloroform, and similar to ammonia. Acute poisoning: The patient experiences severe pulsatile headache, dizziness, nausea and vomiting, tearing, coughing, chest tightness, and difficulty breathing; Severe cases may experience muscle tremors, speech disorders, ataxia, sweating, confusion, and even coma. Myocardial damage and liver dysfunction can also be seen. After rescue and recovery, there may be temporary mental disorders, delayed functional loss of voice, or central hemiplegia. Skin contact can cause rapid redness and swelling, followed by blistering after several hours. Repeated contact can lead to sensitization. Liquid splashing into the eyes can cause corneal burns. Chronic effects: Long term exposure to small amounts can lead to symptoms of neurasthenia syndrome and autonomic nervous system dysfunction. Ethylene oxide is an alkylating agent and has the potential to cause cancer.
