Why choose a multi-element rapid spectrometer to complete cobalt exploration applications?
XRF analyzer can quickly provide geochemical information of multiple elements in situ and provide real-time detection results in the field. The advantages and features of portable XRF analyzers are of great benefit for exploration in green and brown areas, ore grade and beneficiation control, environmental monitoring and remediation, as well as research/teaching in geological/environmental science.
In the application of exploring metals for batteries, compared with traditional XRF equipment in the laboratory, multi-element rapid spectroscopy analyzers can not only provide reliable data faster, enabling explorers to make correct decisions, but also screen samples to provide more suitable samples for laboratory analysis, thereby helping to reduce exploration costs and improve investment return. Multi element rapid spectroscopy analyzer can screen samples to determine appropriate samples for analysis. This preparation of samples can enable portable XRF analyzers to obtain excellent quantitative data close to laboratory analysis results.
Challenges faced in analyzing cobalt elements
XRF analysis is susceptible to interference between elements. Iron (Fe) and cobalt (Co), nickel (Ni) and cobalt (Co) are two common examples of interference. This means that when there is a large amount of iron present, it is difficult for XRF analyzers to distinguish low levels of cobalt. Similarly, the presence of nickel can also make it difficult for XRF analyzers to distinguish cobalt. Unfortunately, the cobalt we usually explore is accompanied by a large amount of iron and nickel.
The Olympus multi-element rapid spectrometer has improved the performance of the Vanta analyzer in exploring metals for batteries. This innovative approach solves the problem of interference caused by the presence of other elements, which makes it difficult for portable XRF analyzers to detect cobalt.
However, more complex deconvolution processing was used for the peaks of iron, cobalt, and nickel. Before deploying this solution, we have tested it using customer samples to ensure its accuracy and reliability.
Test results
We analyzed 16 samples with high iron content: 9%<iron (Fe)<50%, 50 ≤ cobalt (Co) ≤ 6000 ppm, nickel (Ni)<500 ppm. We also analyzed 50 samples with moderate iron content: 0.5%<iron (Fe)<15%, 16<nickel (Ni)<8000 ppm, 50 ppm<cobalt (Co)<2.3%. The sample is a slurry placed in an XRF sample cup, and without calibration, each beam is used for 60 seconds to analyze these samples.
The following charts demonstrate that the results obtained using the Vanta portable XRF analyzer are highly consistent with those obtained from the laboratory, accurately detecting the presence of cobalt element.
