Is it better to use a large walk-in room with constant temperature and humidity, a water-cooled cooling system, or a water tower for heat dissipation?
Date: 2025-08-29Read: 7

In the water-cooled cooling scheme of large walk-in constant temperature and humidity chambers (such as 37 cubic meters, -40 ℃ to 80 ℃), a cooling tower is a better choice. Its comprehensive heat dissipation efficiency, operating cost, and environmental adaptability are superior to chillers, especially suitable for high-power, temperature and humidity environments. The following is a specific analysis:

1、 Core advantages of cooling water tower

Heat dissipation efficiency and stability

Natural heat dissipation mechanism: The cooling tower dissipates heat through natural evaporation of water and mechanical ventilation, and the heat dissipation effect is less affected by environmental temperature. In high temperature environments (such as summer), its heat dissipation capability is significantly better than that of air-cooled systems, and it can stably maintain the temperature of the compressor high-pressure pipe (inlet water 37 ℃, outlet water 32 ℃), avoiding high-pressure alarms or equipment shutdowns caused by insufficient heat dissipation.

High power adaptability: The walk-in laboratory needs to simulate temperature and humidity, and the cooling system power usually exceeds 20kW. The cooling tower can easily meet the heat dissipation needs of high-power equipment by regulating the flow rate of circulating water, while the air cooling system is prone to a decrease in heat dissipation efficiency due to insufficient air circulation at high temperatures.

Operating costs and energy efficiency

Low energy consumption: The power of cooling towers is usually several kilowatts, much lower than that of chillers (tens to hundreds of kilowatts), and long-term operation can significantly reduce electricity bills. For example, at the same power, a water-cooled system is 15% -30% more energy-efficient than an air-cooled system.

The maintenance cost is controllable: although regular cleaning of water pipe impurities and anti scaling treatment are required, the maintenance frequency is lower than that of the chiller (which requires frequent replacement of refrigerant and cleaning of the condenser). If electronic water purification equipment is used, the maintenance cycle can be further extended.

environmental adaptability

Accurate humidity control: The cooling water tower dissipates heat through circulating water, causing minimal interference with the humidity inside the laboratory, while the air flow in the air cooling system may cause local humidity fluctuations, affecting the accuracy of material or electronic product testing.

Noise control: Water towers are usually installed outdoors, with lower noise levels than fans in air-cooled systems (which can reach over 70dB), providing a quieter working environment for the laboratory.

2、 Limitations of chillers

The contradiction between temperature control accuracy and cost

The chiller can achieve a temperature control accuracy of ± 0.1 ℃ through compressor refrigeration, but this advantage is not essential in constant temperature and humidity chambers (laboratories usually require ± 1 ℃ - ± 2 ℃). And high-precision control requires the use of precision sensors and algorithms, further increasing costs.

Initial investment and space occupation

The price of a chiller is 2-3 times that of a cooling tower, and it requires additional components such as refrigerant storage tanks and expansion valves, occupying more space. For a large laboratory with a capacity of 37 cubic meters, a water tower can be installed on the roof to save indoor space.

Poor applicability in arid regions

Chillers require a large amount of water resources for cooling, and their operating costs are high in water scarce areas. The cooling water tower uses evaporation to dissipate heat, resulting in a higher utilization rate of water resources, and can be paired with a circulating water system to reduce waste.

3、 Comparison of application scenarios

sceneApplicability of cooling water towerApplicability of chiller

High power refrigeration (>20kW)✅ Efficient heat dissipation to meet temperature and humidity requirements❌ High energy consumption, uneconomical cost

High humidity environment✅ The heat dissipation process has minimal interference with humidity❌ Air flow may cause humidity fluctuations

Water scarce areas✅ Water saving in circulating water system❌ High consumption of water resources

Noise sensitive scenes✅ Outdoor installation of water tower with low noise❌ Fan noise is loud

Small scale laboratory❌ Requires a large installation space✅ Compact design, suitable for limited space scenarios

4、 Recommended plan

Priority should be given to cooling water towers: suitable for large walk-in constant temperature and humidity chambers with a capacity of 37 cubic meters, especially for environments with temperatures ranging from -40 ℃ to 80 ℃ and high humidity control accuracy (such as ± 1.5% RH).

Supplementary plan for chiller: If the laboratory needs to achieve ultra-low temperature environment below minus 20 ℃ and the budget is sufficient, a small chiller can be configured as an auxiliary refrigeration equipment, but energy consumption and cost need to be balanced.
