Introduction to installation of ultrasonic flowmeter
Date: 2022-10-08Read: 4

Installation details

Before installing an ultrasonic flowmeter, it is necessary to understand the site conditions, including:

What is the distance between the sensor installation location and the host;

2. Pipeline material, wall thickness, and diameter;

3. Pipeline lifespan;

4. Fluid type, presence of impurities, bubbles, and whether the pipe is full;

5. Fluid temperature;

6. Is there any interference source at the installation site (such as frequency conversion, strong magnetic field, etc.);

7. Temperature at the host placement location throughout the four seasons;

8. Whether the power supply voltage used is stable;

9. Whether remote transmission signals are needed and their types;

Based on the on-site situation provided above, the manufacturer can configure according to the on-site situation and, if necessary, can also customize the model.

Installation location

The selection of installation pipe sections has a significant impact on testing accuracy. The selected pipe sections should avoid interference and eddy currents, which have a significant impact on measurement accuracy. Generally, the selection of pipe sections should meet the following conditions:

1. Avoid installing machines in areas with strong magnetic fields and vibration interference, such as water pumps, high-power radios, and frequency converters;

2. The selection of pipes should be uniform, dense, and easy to transmit ultrasonic waves;

3. To have a sufficiently long straight pipe section, the upstream straight pipe section of the installation point must be greater than 10D (note: D=diameter), and the downstream must be greater than 5D;

4. The upstream distance from the installation point to the water pump should be 30D;

5. The fluid should fill the pipeline;

6. There should be sufficient space around the pipeline for on-site personnel to operate, and underground pipelines need to be tested in the following wells:

Installation method

There are generally two installation methods for ultrasonic flow meters, namely Z method and V method.

However, when D<200mm and the on-site conditions are one of the following, the Z method can also be used for installation:

1. When the turbidity of the measured fluid is high and no signal is received or the signal is weak when using the V method for measurement;

2. When there is a lining on the inner wall of the pipeline;

3. When the service life of the pipeline is too long and the inner wall is severely scaled;

For pipelines with good conditions, even if D is slightly greater than 200mm, the V method can still be used for installation to improve measurement accuracy.

probe position

1. Input the pipeline parameters into the instrument, select the probe installation method, and obtain the installation distance;

2. On horizontal pipelines, the middle of the pipeline should generally be selected, avoiding the top and bottom (the top may contain bubbles, and the bottom may have sediment);

3. V-method installation: First determine a point and measure another point horizontally according to the installation distance.

Z-method installation: First determine a point, measure another point horizontally according to the installation distance, and then measure the symmetrical point of this point on the other side of the pipeline.
