Common faults and corresponding solutions of DVL Doppler velocimeter
Date: 2025-07-15Read: 11

The DVL Doppler velocimeter calculates the relative velocity to the seabed by measuring the frequency changes of sound waves reflected back in water, thereby achieving high-precision velocity and position tracking. During use, the DVL Doppler velocimeter may encounter malfunctions. Understanding these faults and their corresponding solutions can help users quickly restore normal device operation, ensuring the accuracy and reliability of data collection.

1、 No signal or weak signal
Phenomenon: There is no speed data output on the display screen, or the data display is unstable and fluctuates greatly.
Reason:
Sensor malfunction: The acoustic transducer is damaged or aged, resulting in insufficient signal strength.
Environmental factors: The water quality is turbid or contains a large number of bubbles, which affects the propagation of sound waves.
Installation issue: The equipment is not installed correctly, with angular deviation or poor contact with the ship's hull.
resolvent:
Check the condition of the acoustic transducer to ensure its surface is clean and free from physical damage. If necessary, clean or replace.
Ensure suitable water quality conditions and avoid use in harsh environments. If it is necessary to work under these conditions, you can try adjusting its L operating frequency or gain setting.
Verify the installation position and angle to ensure good mechanical connection with the hull or other carriers, and calibrate according to the manufacturer's guidelines.
2、 Data drift or inconsistency
Phenomenon: There is a significant deviation between the measurement results and the actual speed, or the data from different time periods is inconsistent.
Reason:
Calibration error: Failure to calibrate regularly results in internal system parameters deviating from standard values.
Hardware failure: Internal circuit board or processor malfunction, affecting data processing accuracy.
Software issue: The firmware version is outdated or there are compatibility issues.
resolvent:
Regularly use standard equipment for calibration to ensure that its measurement accuracy meets the requirements. It is recommended to conduct calibration once every quarter and record the calibration results.
Check the status of all hardware components, including circuit boards, connectors, etc., and replace them promptly if any abnormalities are found. For complex hardware failures, it is recommended to contact professional maintenance personnel for repairs.
Update to a new firmware version, fix known software defects, and improve system stability. Ensure that the software used matches the hardware version.
3、 Communication interruption or data loss
Phenomenon: Data cannot be transmitted to the computer or other external devices normally, or intermittent interruptions occur during the transmission process.
Reason:
Cable issue: Communication cable damage or poor contact, resulting in signal transmission interruption.
Interface configuration error: Improper communication protocol settings result in abnormal communication between devices.
Power supply issue: The unstable power supply voltage can cause the device to restart or crash.
resolvent:
Check the integrity and connection of communication cables to ensure that all joints are securely fastened and not loose. If cable damage is found, replace it with a new cable immediately.
Check the communication protocol settings to ensure that the baud rate, data bits, stop bits, and other parameters between the two devices are consistent. If necessary, refer to the equipment manual to reconfigure the interface parameters.
Use a regulated power supply to supply power to it, avoiding equipment abnormalities caused by voltage fluctuations. Regularly check the working status of the power module to ensure its stable output.
