Common issues with using surge protectors
Date: 2017-03-01Read: 6

Surge protector, also known as lightning arrester, is an electronic device that provides safety protection for various electronic devices, instruments, and communication lines. When surge currents or voltages suddenly occur in electrical circuits or communication lines due to external interference, surge protectors can conduct shunting in a very short time, thereby avoiding damage to other devices in the circuit caused by surges.

Common issues with using surge protectors:

 1) We have not encountered any problems caused by lightning strikes in the past. Do we need to consider surge protection?

Lightning strikes are not the cause of surges

Have you encountered frequent and unexplained system failures?

The malfunction of the system is not necessarily due to the current unfavorable factors. Malfunctions in electronic and electrical systems are often caused by long-term and sustained damage caused by surges, and this damage is often not immediately apparent at the beginning.

 2) We don't have many lightning strikes here, why are there also problems caused by surges?

It is not nearby or local lightning strikes that cause damage to the system

Experience has shown that lightning strikes occurring at a height of one thousand meters can cause malfunctions in our system

In fact, lightning strikes are not the cause of surges. Other factors such as electrostatic discharge, instantaneous overvoltage/overcurrent, and the presence of power cables or high-power electrical equipment nearby can all generate surges in the circuit.

The intensity of lightning activity in the local area can be determined from the distribution map of lightning activity issued by the meteorological department.

  3) We have installed lightning rods and other direct lightning protection measures. Do we still need to consider surge protection measures?

Lightning rods and other direct lightning protection systems can only protect buildings, but cannot prevent various electronic and electrical circuits inside buildings from being invaded by lightning waves.

Only surge protection devices can prevent valuable equipment from crashing and system data loss.

  4) How to determine the necessity of installing surge protectors?

It is necessary to consider the associated losses caused by system downtime, data loss, etc., rather than just the cost of repairing or replacing equipment.

 5) We already have UPS, do we still need to consider surge protection measures?

UPS is used to provide continuous and uninterrupted power supply for critical equipment. It can only eliminate small-scale voltage fluctuations and short-term power interruptions. However, due to factors such as lightning strikes, UPS itself is often damaged due to severe instantaneous voltage fluctuations.

  6) Why do we still need to consider surge protection measures when all our signal circuits are indoors?

Although the entire data circuit is installed next to the power circuit or in close proximity to the steel structure and lightning rod of the building.

The ground potential of the AC power supply of the communication interface equipment connected by the data circuit is severely unbalanced. Here, the data communication interface is easily damaged.
