Rapid determination of ultraviolet auxiliary intensity in disinfection room: standards and operating procedures
Date: 2025-11-20Read: 9
Ultraviolet lamps are the core equipment for sterilization and disinfection in disinfection rooms, and their irradiation intensity directly determines the disinfection effect. If the intensity is insufficient, it will lead to microbial residues and increase the risk of cross infection. Therefore, regularly and quickly measuring the intensity of ultraviolet radiation is the key to ensuring disinfection quality. The specific standards and operating points are as follows:
1、 Core testing standards (based on the disinfection technical specifications of the Ministry of Health)
  1. Ordinary/low ozone straight tube ultraviolet lamp (30W):

  • New lamp tube: At the center position 1m vertically below the lamp tube, the irradiance value must be ≥ 90 μ W/cm ²;

  • Lamp in use: At the same detection position, the irradiance value should be ≥ 70 μ W/cm ². If it is lower than this value, it should be replaced in a timely manner.

  1. Irregular shaped lamp (non straight tube type), high-intensity lamp or non 30W power lamp tube:

There is no unified standard for the detection distance and qualified irradiance value. It is necessary to strictly follow the requirements indicated in the product manual, and in principle, it should not be lower than the irradiance intensity limit specified in the manual.
2、 Quick detection of core tools and operational processes
(1) Tools
Portable ultraviolet radiation meter (with a measuring range of 0-200 μ W/cm ², accuracy of ± 5%, pre calibrated and qualified), gloves, goggles (to avoid direct exposure to ultraviolet radiation).
(2) Simple operation steps
  1. Before testing, close the doors and windows of the disinfection room to ensure that there is no strong light interference in the environment (such as direct sunlight or lighting). Wait for the UV lamp to work stably for 10-15 minutes (the irradiation intensity will only be accurate after the lamp tube emits stable light);

  1. The operator should wear gloves and goggles, hold the radiometer in hand, and position the detector directly towards the center of the ultraviolet lamp tube, maintaining a vertical distance of 1m (a tape measure can be used to assist in measurement to avoid distance deviation);

  1. After the radiometer reading stabilizes, record the value; If there are multiple lamp tubes, the center position of each lamp tube needs to be checked one by one, and the two ends of the lamp tube (10cm away from the end of the lamp tube) can be randomly inspected to ensure uniform irradiation as a whole;

  1. After the test is completed, turn off the UV light, open the window for ventilation for 5-10 minutes, and then evacuate the protective equipment.

3、 Key precautions
  1. The radiometer needs to be calibrated regularly (recommended once a year) to avoid instrument errors causing distortion of detection results;

  1. Clean the surface of the lamp tube during testing (wipe off dust and oil stains with alcohol swabs). Dust on the surface of the lamp tube will reduce the actual irradiation intensity and affect the accuracy of testing;

  1. If the detection value is close to the qualified limit (such as using a lamp tube of about 70 μ W/cm ²), it is recommended to re check every 3-5 days to confirm whether the strength has decreased due to lamp tube aging;

  1. It is strictly prohibited to look directly at ultraviolet lamps without protection to avoid skin burns, eye irritation, and other injuries.
