Overpressure protection function of intelligent pressure transmitter
Date: 2025-08-13Read: 8

Intelligent pressure transmitters are widely used in industrial automation, pressure measurement of liquids and gases, and process control. With the increasing demand for precision, stability, and safety in industrial equipment, transmitters not only need to have accurate pressure measurement capabilities, but also need to have certain protection functions to ensure their long-term stable operation in complex environments.

Overpressure protection refers to taking certain measures to prevent damage to the transmitter when the pressure of the measured medium exceeds the designed working pressure of the transmitter. Overvoltage may cause damage to pressure sensors and even damage internal circuits, therefore, overvoltage protection function is crucial for extending the service life of transmitters and ensuring equipment safety.
The overpressure protection function of intelligent pressure transmitters can be achieved through the following methods:
1. Overvoltage protection in hardware design
Adopting hardware level design to prevent overvoltage damage. Common overvoltage protection methods include:
1. Mechanical limit device:
Some transmitters limit the excessive transmission of pressure by setting mechanical limit devices, such as adding pressure limiting devices at the front end of the pressure sensor, such as valves, pressure reducers, etc. In this way, when the pressure is too high, the mechanical device will actively open to release the excessive pressure.
2. Structural design enhancement:
By increasing the pressure resistance strength of the pressure sensor and using materials with stronger pressure resistance, the pressure range of the transmitter can be improved. For example, using metal isolation film, reinforced stainless steel shell, etc. to enhance the compressive performance of the equipment.
3. Overvoltage protection circuit:
Some transmitters will incorporate overvoltage protection circuits into their internal circuits. For example, setting up current limiting circuits, overvoltage detection circuits, etc. When the pressure exceeds the safe range, the circuit will cut off the signal output or take limiting measures.
2. Software level overvoltage alarm and handling
In addition to hardware design, overvoltage protection functions are usually enhanced through software. Software level protection methods can include the following:
1. Overvoltage alarm function:
When the pressure exceeds the preset safety threshold, the transmitter will monitor in real-time through internal software and issue alarm signals in a timely manner. The alarm content can be transmitted to the operator through a display screen, sound and light alarm device, or remote communication interface for timely action.
2. Automatic pressure limiting processing:
In some devices, overvoltage protection is not limited to alarms, but can also automatically take measures. For example, when the pressure exceeds the set range, the device can automatically adjust the measurement range or change the measurement method to avoid direct damage to the pressure sensor.
3. Data recording and analysis:
Some transmitters have built-in data storage functions. When an overvoltage event occurs, the transmitter will record the occurrence time, pressure value, and other information of the event, and store it in the device memory. Users can understand the causes of overvoltage through subsequent data analysis and take corresponding adjustment measures.
The overpressure protection of intelligent pressure transmitters is closely related to the type of pressure sensor they choose. Different types of pressure sensors have different overpressure tolerance and protection characteristics. Common types of pressure sensors include:
1. Resistance strain sensor:
The resistance strain sensor has strong overvoltage capability and can usually withstand short-term overvoltage, but if it exceeds its rated overvoltage value, irreversible damage may occur.
2. Capacitive sensors:
The overvoltage capability of capacitive sensors is relatively weak, and special attention needs to be paid to the protection design in overvoltage environments.
3. Piezoresistive sensors:
Piezoresistive sensors have strong overvoltage capabilities, but they also require voltage limiting devices or protective circuits to prevent overvoltage damage.
The overpressure protection function of intelligent pressure transmitters is one of the key factors to ensure long-term stable operation of the equipment. By combining hardware design and software functionality, various overvoltage situations can be effectively addressed to prevent equipment damage.
