How to troubleshoot if the flow meter does not display but there is fluid flow in the pipeline
Date: 2025-11-27Read: 8

The flowmeter has no display but there is fluid flow in the pipeline. The core troubleshooting logic is to first check the power supply and wiring, then check the instrument settings and installation, and finally check the sensor and medium status. Follow the steps below to locate the problem one by one:

Firstly, investigate the power supply and wiring (common causes)

Confirm if the power supply is normal: When the flowmeter requires an external power supply (such as 24V DC), use a multimeter to measure the power supply voltage. If the voltage is 0 or lower than the rated value, check if the power adapter or switch power supply is faulty, or if the power supply line is disconnected or has poor contact.

Check if the wiring is correct: Refer to the flowmeter manual to verify if the power and signal wires (such as 4-20mA, RS485) have reversed, loose, or disconnected wiring terminals, especially the positive and negative terminals of the two-wire flowmeter should not be reversed.

Troubleshooting fuses/protective devices: Some flow meters have built-in fuses. If the power supply is normal but there is no display, check if the fuse is blown and replace it with a fuse of the same specification before trying again.

Step 2: Check the instrument settings and display mode

Confirm that the display function is not turned off: Some smart flow meters support "sleep mode" and "backlight off", or are mistakenly set to "no display" mode. Press the instrument button to wake up the screen and restore the default display settings.

Verify whether the parameter settings match: If the flowmeter parameters (such as range, medium type, pipe diameter) are set incorrectly, it may result in "no valid measurement value" and no display. After restoring the factory settings, reconfigure the parameters or check if the display is locked due to misoperation.

Troubleshooting instrument malfunction prompt: Some flow meters are not displaying, which may be due to hardware failure. Try to power off and restart (power off for 30 seconds and then power on again). If there is still no display, it may be due to damage to the instrument motherboard and display screen.

Step 3: Verify installation and sensor status

Check if the sensor installation is compliant: Different types of flow meters have installation requirements (such as ultrasonic flow meters requiring sufficient straight pipe sections and electromagnetic flow meter electrodes to be submerged). If the installation position is not appropriate (such as near bends or valves), it may cause the sensor to fail to detect fluid and display no information.

Check for sensor contamination or damage: If the sensor probe of a contact flow meter (such as a turbine or electromagnetic) is covered by impurities or scale in the medium, or if the transducer surface of a non-contact sensor (such as ultrasonic) is dirty, it will affect signal detection. Clean the sensor and try again; If the sensor is damaged (such as electrode corrosion or impeller jamming), it needs to be replaced.

Confirm that the fluid state meets the measurement conditions: Some flow meters have a minimum flow velocity requirement (such as turbine flow meters requiring ≥ 0.3m/s). If the fluid flow velocity in the pipeline is too low, it may not trigger the measurement and result in no display; The viscosity and temperature of the medium exceeding the applicable range of the flowmeter may also cause measurement failure.

Step 4: Investigate signal transmission and external interference

If the flowmeter is a "sensor+transmitter" split type, check whether the signal cable between the two is broken and whether the shielding layer is damaged to avoid no display due to signal transmission interruption.

Stay away from strong electromagnetic interference sources: When the flowmeter is close to the frequency converter or high-voltage line, electromagnetic interference may cause the instrument to crash or show no display. Temporarily disconnect the interference source, or use shielded cables or install signal isolators to verify whether it has returned to normal.
