Basher trough, also known as Babbitt trough, is an auxiliary equipment for measuring open channel flow. The prototype is a Venturi water tank, and the latter experiment was conducted by VM. Cone in Colorado, USA in 1915. In 1922, F.L. Marshall made a fundamental change to this and created the now widely used Bachel groove. Subsequent hydraulic experiments were repeated multiple times, resulting in various measuring tanks ranging in size from 1 inch to 50 inches. The name Bacher Trough was given by the American Civil Society in 1929. Afterwards, many countries such as the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Italy, India, Argentina, etc. also proposed various types of design schemes for Venturi water tanks and conducted experiments, but the Bachel tank is still the most popular tank in Venturi water tanks.

The Bacher trough consists of three parts: an upstream contraction inlet section, a short straight throat, and a downstream diffusion outlet section. Among them, the groove bottom of the contraction inlet section is generally inclined downstream, while the groove bottom of the diffusion outlet section is opposite to the throat groove bottom in the direction of inclination.

Its shape is more complex than the structure of a weir, and its cost is relatively high. In addition, in order to improve the accuracy of water consumption measurement, the precision requirements for the dimensions of each part of the measuring tank are extremely strict. That is why the Bacher trough has advantages that other measuring weirs do not have. Firstly, it is easy to install and adaptable to various terrains. Secondly, the loss of water level is relatively small. According to statistical data, the water level loss in the Bacher trough is about 1/4 of that in the measuring weir. Thirdly, by using the Bacher trough, even if there are some solid substances in the water, there is almost no sedimentation, and there will be no sedimentation of sediment. The impact on the flow velocity is small, and the impact on the water level on the downstream side is also small. Finally, the Bacher trough has a wide range of flow measurement. According to statistical data, the auxiliary equipment for measuring the flow rate of this open channel has a water measurement range of 0.1-7.6m3/s, so the water measurement is relatively stable and very accurate.

In the context of comprehensive reform of agricultural water prices, irrigation areas have updated and renovated their water conservancy projects, applying the Bacher trough to the renovation project, greatly improving the accuracy of water measurement in irrigation areas. This not only provides reliable data for evaluating the water utilization rate of irrigation areas, but also effectively cultivates the water-saving awareness of irrigation area residents, promotes the sustainable development of irrigation area agriculture, and promotes the modernization of irrigation area management.
