ybzhanSelection and Measurement Principle of Compressed Air Dew Point Meter

The selection of a compressed air dew point meter is a highly technical task, and improper selection can lead to inaccurate measurements, equipment damage, and even affect product quality. Below, I will provide you with a comprehensive and clear selection guide.

1、 Core question: Why measure dew point?

Before selecting, the measurement purpose must be clearly defined, which directly determines the accuracy, range, and price requirements of the instrument.

1. Process requirements: Industries such as spraying, drying, and food and pharmaceutical have strict requirements for the dryness of compressed air. If the dew point is not up to standard, it will directly lead to product scrap.

2. Equipment protection: prevent ice and corrosion inside compressed air pipelines and equipment, and extend equipment life.

3. Energy management: Monitor the working efficiency of drying machines (such as suction dryers) to avoid excessive energy consumption.

4. Quality compliance: Meet the requirements of international or industry standards such as GMP and ISO 8573-1.

2、 Understanding key concepts: pressure dew point vs. atmospheric dew point

This is the most confusing and crucial concept in selection!

Pressure Dew Point (PDP): The dew point temperature of compressed air at its actual working pressure. This is the value we usually measure directly on the pipeline.

Atmospheric Dew Point (ADP): The dew point temperature measured when compressed air is released to standard atmospheric pressure (atmospheric pressure).

Why is this important?

The pressure dew point of the same compressed air is much higher than the atmospheric dew point. For example, at a pressure of 0.7 MPa (approximately 7 bar), the dew point is measured to be -20 ° C. If it is released into the atmosphere, its atmospheric dew point will become about -40 ° C. This is because as the pressure increases, water vapor is more likely to condense, and the dew point temperature also increases accordingly.

The dew point level specified in the international standard ISO 8573-1 refers to the atmospheric dew point. If you need to compare with this standard, you must know whether the measured value is pressure dew point or atmospheric dew point, and convert it.

2. Key selection points:

  (1) Clear requirement: Does your process or standard require a pressure dew point or an atmospheric dew point?

  (2) Instrument function: Most high-quality dew point meters can directly display both and automatically convert them. When selecting, priority should be given to instruments with this function.

3、 Measurement principle and selection of dew point meter

The following are several mainstream sensor principles in the field of compressed air:

1. Polymer capacitive sensor

Working principle: The polymer film in the sensor absorbs or releases water molecules, causing a change in capacitance and calculating the dew point.

Advantages:

  (1) High precision and fast response speed.

  (2) Wide range, capable of covering a dew point range of -80 ° C to+20 ° C.

  (3) Good stability and anti condensation (even short-term condensation can be restored after drying).

  (4) High cost-effectiveness is currently the mainstream choice.

Disadvantages:

  (1) Performance may decrease due to contamination by oil vapor and certain chemicals.

Applicable scenarios: The vast majority of industrial applications, especially those that require high precision and stability, such as detecting the outlet of a drying machine and key process points.

2. Alumina sensor

Working principle: Use the impedance change of alumina film to measure the water vapor content.

Advantages:

  (1) Very sturdy and resistant to high pressure.

  (2) Low cost.

Disadvantages:

(1) Poor accuracy and stability, prone to drift, requiring frequent calibration.

  (2) Slow response speed.

  (3) Sensitive to installation torque.

Applicable scenarios: gradually phased out and only used in situations where precision is not required and budget is extremely limited.

3. Cold mirror principle

Working principle: The mirror surface is cooled by thermoelectric cooling. When the temperature of the mirror surface reaches the dew point, water vapor condenses, causing a change in the reflectivity of the mirror surface. By detecting this change, the accurate dew point temperature can be obtained.

Advantages:

  (1) The highest accuracy is considered as the "benchmark method" for dew point measurement.

  (2) Good long-term stability.

Disadvantages:

  (1) The price is expensive.

  (2) The cleanliness requirements for the sample gas are high, and mirror contamination can lead to measurement failure.

  (3) The equipment is complex and requires a large amount of maintenance.

Applicable scenarios: laboratory calibration, national measurement units, or scientific research and industrial sites with poor requirements for measurement accuracy.
