Introduction to MD Diagnostics H2Check Hydrogen Breath Detector in the UK
H2 Check is applicable to patients of all age groups. Its principle and purpose are simple diagnosis of lactose, fructose or sucrose intolerance. Using a special re breathing technique, patients need to simply inhale their breath into the H2 test to immediately obtain a result of one in a million.
Hydrogen breath test is a non-invasive measurement of hydrogen gas in breath, as sugars or carbohydrates are not fully digested. Bacteria in the colon digest and convert sugars and carbohydrates into gas, primarily hydrogen gas. Under normal circumstances, most sugars and carbohydrates are digested in the small intestine, but when this does not occur, they reach the colon where a large number of bacteria are present, resulting in an increase in the amount of hydrogen produced.
As a result, hydrogen produced by bacteria is absorbed through the walls of the small or large intestine. Then hydrogen enters the lungs, where it is released and exhaled during respiration, which can be measured through H2 testing.
One of the common hydrogen breath tests is lactose intolerance. Lactose is a sugar found in milk and other dairy products. It cannot be absorbed into the body unless it becomes glucose. When lactose enters the small intestine through the stomach and comes into contact with lactate enzymes, this change occurs. If lactase is insufficient, lactose cannot be broken down, which in turn leads to lactose intolerance.
Bacterial overgrowth can also be determined using hydrogen breath testing. The number of bacteria in the colon is higher, while the number of bacteria in the small intestine is much lower. In addition, the types of bacteria in the small intestine are different from those in the colon. Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) refers to the presence of an abnormally large number of bacteria in the small intestine, similar to those found in the colon.
