What is the difference between a liquid level switch and a liquid level gauge?
Date: 2025-08-25Read: 8

Yesterday was Sunday, and a customer from Jiangdu called to inquire about buying a liquid level gauge. They need to continuously measure the liquid level in real-time, and also need to buy a liquid level switch to check if the critical liquid level has been reached? After listening to the customer's requirements for purchasing liquid level gauges, we explained to the customer that these two functions require two different liquid level detection devices, with differences reflected in measurement accuracy and application scenarios. The liquid level switch triggers a switch signal through a preset liquid level value and is suitable for fixed-point liquid level control. Typical applications include water treatment, anti overflow protection for chemical storage tanks, etc; Its structure is simple and its response speed is fast, but it cannot provide continuous liquid level data. The liquid level gauge can accurately measure the liquid level height, output 4-20mA or digital signals, and is suitable for real-time monitoring scenarios such as oil well monitoring and pharmaceutical processes. Some models have a pressure resistance of up to 10MPa and are suitable for high temperature and high pressure environments. Then we asked the customer about the name, pressure, temperature, density, range, installation method, tank material, and required quantity of the medium to be measured on site. After our explanation, the customer finally chose to purchase a liquid level gauge to monitor the height of the liquid level in the tank in real time. If an alarm is needed, the real-time measured liquid level and other information can be transmitted to the control room or remote terminal through wireless or wired means, making it easier for users to monitor and control changes in the liquid level.

Today I will explain to you: What is the difference between a liquid level switch and a liquid level gauge?

Firstly, let's talk about the definitions of these two products

1. What is the difference between a liquid level switch and a liquid level gauge?

Liquid level switch, also known as water level switch or liquid level sensor, is a switch used to control the liquid level. Its main function is to control. When the measured liquid medium reaches a certain indication position, the liquid level switch will output an alarm signal according to its working principle, thereby stopping the continued delivery of the liquid medium; When the measured liquid medium is below a certain set position, the liquid level switch will also output an alarm signal to remind the headquarters to open the gate and start transporting the liquid. The liquid level switch is a branch below the level switch. And level switch is a general term for liquid level switch and level switch.

Level gauge: It measures the height of liquid medium in containers (including tanks, storage tanks, spherical tanks, etc.) and is called the liquid level. The focus of its function is on measurement, which is different from the liquid level switch that uses switch quantity. The liquid level gauge is a continuous measurement method that can display the specific position of the liquid in real time. A level gauge is a branch below a level gauge. Depending on the medium being measured, level gauges can be divided into level gauges and level gauges.

Next, let's talk about the classification of these two products

2. What is the difference between a liquid level switch and a liquid level gauge?

Liquid level switches can be divided into two categories based on whether they are in contact or not: contact type liquid level switches and non-contact type liquid level switches. Generally speaking, the most widely used contact type liquid level switches are float level switches and tuning fork level switches; Non contact level switches include ultrasonic level switches, electronic level switches, capacitive level switches, electrode level switches, and so on.

In terms of classification, level gauges mainly include tuning fork level gauges, float level gauges, magnetic flap level gauges, ultrasonic level gauges, radar level gauges, and so on.

Finally, let's talk about the uses of these two products

3. What is the difference between a liquid level switch and a liquid level gauge?

1) Liquid level switch: It is a method of controlling the operation or stop of equipment using liquid level switch signals.

Liquid level gauge: It is a method of remote automatic control and display by converting the liquid level height into a standard signal.

2) Liquid level switch: The product has the advantages of "simple structure, low price, easy maintenance and replacement, and convenient operation".

Liquid level gauge: Product advantages include the ability to achieve continuous liquid level detection, high reliability, and accurate liquid level display and control

3) Liquid level switch: mainly suitable for occasions that do not require precise liquid level detection and control, such as water level control of ordinary water tanks, start stop control of electric water pumps, etc.

Liquid level gauge: Suitable for applications that require precise liquid level detection and control, such as liquid level control of storage tanks, pipelines, reaction vessels, and other equipment in industries such as petroleum, chemical, and pharmaceutical.
