New partner for measuring flow velocity: Understanding the core components of handheld radar flow meters
Date: 2025-11-05Read: 9
Handheld radar flowmeterIt is a portable flow velocity measurement device based on Doppler principle and K-band radar technology, widely used in fields such as water management, environmental protection, flood prevention and control, and engineering monitoring. Its core advantage lies in non-contact measurement. By emitting high-frequency radar waves and capturing the frequency changes of water surface reflection signals, it achieves a wide range of 0.01-15m/s and high-precision flow velocity measurement of ± 0.03m/s, while avoiding the shortcomings of traditional contact sensors that are easily affected by sediment, sewage corrosion, and floating debris interference.
Handheld radar flowmeterIt usually consists of the following key components:
1. Radar antenna/microwave sensor
Transmitting and receiving microwave signals (commonly used frequency bands are 24 GHz or 35 GHz).
Utilizing the Doppler effect: The frequency variation of microwaves reflected by water flow is proportional to the velocity of the water flow.
Usually integrated at the front end of the instrument, it has a directional beam to focus the measurement area.
2. Signal processing unit (main control circuit/microprocessor)
Filter, amplify, and digitize the received echo signals.
Calculate the Doppler frequency shift through built-in algorithms and convert it into the actual surface velocity of the water flow.
Support automatic recognition of effective signals and removal of noise interference.
3. Display module
Mostly LCD or OLED screens, real-time display:
instantaneous flow rate
average flow velocity
battery level
Measure angle (if equipped with tilt sensor)
Work status and other information
4. Operation control components
Including physical buttons or a simple touch interface, used for:
Power on
Start/Stop Measurement
Switch units (m/s, ft/s, etc.)
View historical data, etc
5. Power system
Usually, rechargeable lithium batteries (such as 18650 batteries or specialized lithium battery packs) are used.
Supports continuous working for several hours, with low battery warning and automatic sleep function.
6. Shell and structural design
Waterproof, dustproof, and drop resistant (common protection level is IP67 or higher).
Ergonomic, easy to grip and aim with one hand.
Lightweight design, easy to carry in the wild.
7. Aiming auxiliary device
Laser pointer: helps users accurately align with the target water surface area.
Optical sight (some models): Similar to a telescope structure, it improves long-range aiming accuracy.
8. Tilt angle sensor (optional but common)
The angle between the measuring instrument and the horizontal plane.
Automatic angle compensation for flow velocity (as the radar measures the velocity component along the beam direction, it needs to be converted to horizontal flow velocity).
9. Data storage and communication module (equipped with mid to high D models)
Built in memory: records data such as time, flow rate, angle, etc.
Communication interface: such as Bluetooth USB、RS232, Used for exporting data to mobile phones, tablets, or computers.
Can be used in conjunction with dedicated apps or hydrological software for data analysis.
