UPM-1 color changing resin (indicator resin) is a strong acidic cation exchange resin loaded with an indicator. It is manufactured in the hydrogen type and can undergo ion exchange reactions with cations in water, while also exhibiting significant color changing characteristics with changes in its own ion type. When UPM-11 color changing resin is regenerated (H-type), it is brownish yellow, and when it fails (Na type), it becomes rose red, with a very obvious color difference.

UPM-1 color changing resin is mainly used to determine the hydrogen conductivity of the effluent from steam and condensate precision treatment mixed beds in thermal power plants. The color changing resin column is installed before the hydrogen conductivity meter. After the water sample passes through, it can remove free ammonia from the condensate and convert all cations in the water into hydrogen ions with higher conductivity, greatly improving the sensitivity of monitoring ions in water. At the same time, when the resin fails, it turns rose red, clearly indicating the working status of the exchange column.
Color changing resin can also be matched with strong alkali anion resin (such as UPM-22 type) and installed in small diameter transparent exchange columns. The regeneration timing is determined by the color change after resin failure, and it is used in small pure water systems such as food, medicine, and electronic instruments.
