Why consider using a 4K thermostat?

The 4K low-temperature thermostat allows you to cool samples, devices, or equipment without the inconvenience and cost of liquid helium. They can be widely applied in research and industry. Some typical applications include materials research, superconductivity, cryogenic pumps, shroud cooling, and helium recondensation.

How does a 4K low-temperature cooler work?

The two-stage Gifford McMahon (GM) refrigeration system has been widely used for decades. Room temperature helium gas is first compressed and then supplied to the cold head through flexible transport pipelines. Compressed helium gas is cooled by expansion and provides cooling for the two heaters on the cold head. After the refrigeration machine cools down, the gas returns to the compressor to repeat the cycle.

The pulse tube (PT) refrigeration system uses a similar compression/expansion cycle, but eliminates the mobile heat storage chamber found in conventional refrigeration machines. Compared to GM systems, PT cryogenic coolers typically have reduced vibration levels at the vacuum interface flange. Refer to the three main differences between PT low-temperature cooler and GM low-temperature cooler.

The Sumitomo Heavy Industries (SHI) 4K low-temperature thermostat uses rare earth heat exchanger materials and has improved GM cycle and PT configuration. These materials can maintain useful heat capacity at temperatures below 4 K, resulting in basic temperatures that were previously unavailable in two-stage cryogenic coolers.

Is a 4K low-temperature thermostat economical and practical?

Before the introduction of the 4K low-temperature thermostat, liquid helium was most commonly used to cool equipment and experiments to 4K. The following figure shows the operating costs of a typical liquid helium cooling device (excluding evaporation losses from storage Dewar flasks). In some cases, the full cost of the 4K thermostat can be recovered in the first year!
