The Lake Shore germanium resistance temperature sensor in the United States is a recognized secondary standard thermometer, which has been used for nearly 40 years for measurements in the range of 0.05K to 30K.


The Lake Shore germanium sensor in the United States is very useful within a temperature range of two orders of magnitude. The exact range depends on the doping of germanium element. The low temperature range is between 0.05K and 100K. The sign of dR/dT changes between 100K and 300K, and the dR/dT changes very little for all models above 100K. The resistance of the sensor changes from a few ohms at its useful upper temperature limit to several tens of kiloohms at its lower temperature limit.


The sensitivity of the sensor rapidly decreases with decreasing temperature, and the resolution is high at lower temperatures. These characteristics make it useful for sub milliK control of the sensor at a temperature of 4.2K.


The stability of the sensor is excellent, with a repeatability of ± 0.5mk at 4.2K. Germanium resistors are usually a good choice for high-precision temperature measurements below 30K. Not recommended for use in a magnetic field environment.
