Working principle of flame photometric detector (FPD)
Flame photometric detector (FPD) is a highly selective and sensitive detector used in gas chromatography for detecting compounds containing phosphorus and sulfur. When the sample is burned in a hydrogen rich flame, phosphorus containing organic compounds mainly emit light with a wavelength of 526nm in the form of HPO fragments, while sulfur-containing compounds emit characteristic light with a wavelength of 394nm in the form of S2 molecules. The photomultiplier tube converts light signals into electrical signals, which are amplified by microcurrents and recorded. This detector has a response value ratio of up to 104 for organic phosphorus and organic sulfur, compared to the response value for hydrocarbons. Therefore, it can eliminate a large number of solvent peaks and hydrocarbon interference, which is very beneficial for the analysis of trace phosphorus and sulfur. It is the main tool for detecting organic phosphorus pesticides and sulfur-containing pollutants.
