1 Purpose and Scope of Application

Determine the content of weak particles in crushed stone, gravel, and broken gravel.

2 Instruments and materials

2.1 Balance or platform scale: Weigh 5kg with a sensitivity not exceeding 5g.

2.2 Standard sieves: including circular hole sieves with apertures of 5mm, 10mm, and 20mm, or square hole sieves with apertures of 4.75mm, 9.5mm, and 16mm.

2.3 Press machine

2.4 Others: Shallow plates, brushes, etc.

3 Experimental Steps

Weigh 2kg (m1) of air dried sample, and if the particle size is greater than 40mm, weigh 4kg. Sift and divide into 1 part each of 5mm~10mm, 10mm~20mm, and 20mm or more (or 4.75mm~9.5mm, 9.5mm~16mm, and 16mm or more for square hole sieve); Place each particle in the center of the press platform and apply loads of 0.15kN, 0.25kN, and 0.34kN according to particle size. Broken particles are considered weak particles and should be discarded. Weigh the mass of unbroken particles (m2).

4 Calculations

Calculate the content of weak particles according to equation (1), accurate to 0.1%.

In the formula: P - content of weak particles in coarse aggregate,%;

M1- total mass of particles of each particle size, g;

M2- the total mass of intact particles in each particle size after the experiment.
