Cable breakdown test
The breakdown test of cables involves gradually increasing the voltage until insulation breakdown occurs, in order to obtain the breakdown voltage value of the cable. The purpose of this type of test is to assess the ability of cable insulation to withstand voltage and the safety margin between the working voltage. The strength of AC breakdown electric field is one of the important parameters in cable design.
The breakdown strength of communication is closely related to the speed of voltage rise. Continuous voltage rise causes the cable to breakdown within a few minutes, which is called instantaneous breakdown. There is basically no thermal factor, and it belongs to the type of electrical breakdown. Therefore, wires and cables generally do not undergo this type of test. Another method is to gradually increase the voltage, starting from a lower voltage (such as 0.5~2 times the operating voltage), and maintaining sufficient working time for the cable to fully generate electricity and heat at this voltage level. Then it rises to another voltage level. Gradually increase until breakdown occurs. The rising voltage of each level increases step by step according to the percentage of initial pressurization. This experiment reflects the factors of thermal breakdown. Such experimental results have good reference value. It is often used when researching products.
