Standard compaction is only one indoor geotechnical testing tool. Used for soil compaction tests. Composed of a hammer of specified weight, guide rod, and compacting cylinder. During the experiment, the test soil sample with a certain amount of water is layered and filled into the compaction cylinder, and each layer is compacted with a specified hammer distance and hammer sound (i.e. a certain compaction function). The dry bulk density and moisture content of the compaction sample are measured, and then the water content is changed to repeat the above process. In this way, the compaction effect (represented by dry bulk density) and moisture content under a certain compaction function can be obtained. The compaction function can also be changed as needed during the experiment. The compaction function of the standard compaction instrument is basically the same as that of commonly used compaction tools.

The compaction property of soil refers to the ability of soil particles to overcome inter particle resistance, produce displacement, rearrange, reduce porosity, increase density, improve strength, and reduce compaction and permeability under certain compaction functions. However, even with the same compaction function, the compaction effect may not be completely the same for different types and moisture contents of soil during the compaction process. Therefore, in order to ensure technical reliability and economic rationality, research is conducted on the compaction of fill soil.

There are two methods for studying the compaction properties of soil: one is to conduct compaction tests indoors using a standard compaction instrument; Another method is to conduct rolling tests on site using rolling equipment, and during construction, control the construction parameters (including the model of rolling equipment, vibration frequency and weight, soil thickness, water addition, number of rolling passes, etc.) and dry density simultaneously.

In addition, coarse-grained soils are generally not subjected to compaction tests, and the compaction properties of coarse-grained soils such as sand and gravel are also related to their moisture content. Generally, when completely dry or fully saturated with water, it is easy to compact to a higher dry density. In a damp state, due to the capillary pressure, the connection between soil particles is increased, making it difficult to compact the fill and significantly reducing its dry density. When the compaction function is certain, sufficient watering is applied to make the soil material close to saturation, resulting in a higher density and a coarse-grained soil compaction curve after compaction.
